CE 272 – Advanced Engineering Hydraulics Spring 2018

Homework #5 – Due Friday, March 2, 2018 at 11:59PM on SacCT

1. The Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow are:

𝜕𝑢𝑖 𝜕𝑢𝑖 1 𝜕𝑃 𝜕 2 𝑢𝑖
+ 𝑢𝑗 =− +𝜐 − 𝑔𝑖
𝜕𝑡 𝜕𝑥𝑗 𝜌 𝜕𝑥𝑖 𝜕𝑥𝑗 𝜕𝑥𝑗

a. Write out the x-direction component of the equation element by element.

b. Explain what each term of the equation represents.

2. Consider fully-developed, steady, laminar flow between two horizontal plates. The top plate
is moving at velocity U0. The bottom plate is not moving. The plates are aligned with the x-
direction. There is no velocity in the y or z directions. Solve the Navier-Stokes equations for
the velocity in the x direction. Assume there is no pressure gradient.

3. Consider fully-developed, steady, laminar flow down a flat plate. The plate is not moving and
the flow is open to the atmosphere. The plate is aligned with the x-direction and has an angle
with the horizontal of . There is no velocity in the y or z directions.
a. Solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity in the x-direction.
b. Integrate the result from (a) over the depth to find the flow per unit width down the
plate.
