1. Background
One of the issue that is still faced by many countries, especially ASEAN, is
Environmental Issues. Marine pollution is an example of environmental issue in
ASEAN, a lot of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean. In 2015 Six ASEAN
countries are listed in the top 20 countries that mismanage plastic waste 1. The
rising amounts of waste and its management poses a serious challenge for most
Southeast Asia countries, especially plastic bags, e-waste and food waste.
Different types of wastes are mixed together leading to unsustainable end-of-
pipe management.2
Waste is only one of the environmental issue that needs attention from ASEAN
countries, there are still more issues that needs to be solved. Since 1977 ASEAN
benefits the peoples and is inclusive, sustainable, resilient, and dynamic3. There
are seven strategic priorities have been identified under the strategic plan:
5. Climate change
6. Chemicals and waste
7. Environmental education and sustainable consumption and production
Youth could become the agent of change. There are 213 million youth in ASEAN
countries in 2015 and still projected to increase in 2030 (UN DESA 2017).
