Lesson Title/Focus Module 2- Introduction to Short Stories

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply what they have learned
through reading and listening to the short stories that they have listened to and write a
reflection on which stories they liked and why.
2. During the module, student’s will participate in discussions regarding the questions on
the module and their experiences with the various texts.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT
 Alberta Program of Studies – ELA Grade 7
 Various types of short stories (on websites, more contemporary stories)
  Videos of short stories
PREPARATION & LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATION
 Have all of the information set up for the students
 Be available for students if they may need assistance (through e mail)
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:  Observe the student’s opinions on why they favour one
story over another.
 Observe the student’s dialogue with each other during
their discussions
Essential Question:  What makes a short story successful?
Products/Performances:  Students will work towards an understanding of what
short stories they enjoy, and why that is.

and explain why you liked it

Adaptation  Students who may have trouble reading will be able

to learn through videos and websites that include
audio versions of the story.
 Students who may have difficulty typing are able to
submit a video instead of a written reflection.
 Students can also submit an audio recording through
google docs

opportunities for provides them with an opportunity to be introduced to short
students? stories. The students are able to read the short stories and then
later provide their opinion on which one they liked the most and
why. This will help the students be able to look at a short story
and see what they feel makes it successful. Later on, they will
work to identify the key features or elements of a short story that
are meant to be included, this way they can appreciate these
concepts and apply them to their own writing on the last
assignment.
