European standards for pressure equipment:

harmonised, supporting and relevant horizontal

standards.
Ed Haynes
Consultant – Pressure Equipment

SYNOPSIS

The Pressure Equipment Directive came into force in May 2002, and several
standards, developed by CEN under a mandate from the European Commission,
have been harmonised and published in the Official Journal of the European
Community. The major harmonised product standards replace existing national
standards. Supporting standards include some application standards for welding and
non-destructive testing. Harmonised European standards provide a means by which
a manufacturer can claim presumption of conformity to the essential safety
requirements of the directive.
