Narrative Report

Being an electrical engineering student, under a Center of Excellence University, it is a

must for us to be trained to design a system specifically electricity distribution. To do that, we are

not necessarily go to an electric distribution sites and implement our design, but rather we will

make a miniature model that will reflect the thought of each individual designer. We call this

model as prototype.

Having a prototype model will allow us, future engineer to review, to plan better, and to

investigate carefully for the best design of a certain project.

In partial fulfillment of the subject substation design, we were obliged to construct a

prototype model of the electricity distribution which mainly started from a substation down to the

end users. The class were subdivided into 7 groups and each group was composed of five members.

Luckily, upon the shuffled picking of group members, our group’s majority 4 out of 5 are boarders

of Sevilla, San Fernando City which I thought our advantage because we could be able to check

our work anytime.

To start with the designing, first thing we did is to sketch a system which was composed

of substations, industrial, commercial, and residential areas. To start with the design is really a

hard task because we needed to position those sub areas in the right place. Also regard the 4 by 4

feet scaling which added more difficulty to do the task. Actually, we had 5 argument design before

we came to a final majority design of the group.

After we sketched, we consulted our substation design instructor, Engr. Ariel Canedo, if

we were on the right track. There were some corrections, but we tried to fix it smartly. We aimed

for that perfect design, but as he said, there’s no such perfect design.
When we already had our approved final design, we portrait it using AutoCAD for more

accurate and formalization of the draft. And after that, the group had a discussion on what structural

components is to be placed on each sub areas, specifically the infrastructure buildings to be put.

We decided to make a hospital, university, company buildings, church, houses, convenient stores,

mall, and the highlighted Eiffel tower. And most importantly, we decided that the substation is to

be designed as ‘L’ shape at the two adjacent side of the ply board. This substation was classified

into primary and secondary substation.

So planning is done. Next thing we did is we covered the working surface with a green felt

paper. This would serve as the based surface of everything. Eventually, we placed a cut papers

which represents those objects to be place. We did this to check on how much each object (for

example each building) can occupy so that in case we lacked of space, we would be able to adjust

things that it may.

Upon designing the surface of the board, we then purchased our materials and tools to be

used aside of course to the felt paper which was foremost bought. We bought mainly those

important things we knew in making structure knowing that we can manage to buy things that is

not expected to buy and just had realized along the construction.

The technique of the group agreed that we will make first those buildings before any other

else. Mainly because the highlight of this design focused on substation, and so we believed that as

others do their substation design, we can collect a strategies from them on choosing the easiest but

best ways we could do to our substation.

In constructing our buildings, we used matt board, as being advised by our instructor. And

on designing such buildings, it was really a tough work. We did it slowly and carefully for we put
every small single detail of it so that it would appear to be realistic despite the fact that the scale

of each floor’s height is just equivalent to an inch, small enough to put all the details we wanted

for each building. However, constructing buildings was fun! Because in that way, we could able

to express our ideal homes and buildings, which is very common thought of every aspiring

Engineers.

The next thing we did is then the construction of our substation. This part is quite difficult

task for we needed to search for every components of a substation and their sequence, their

arrangement, and how do they look like. Most of the components, we used rivets but of different

in size depending the proportionality of each component. We used rivet because it is of the same

shape as those of voltage transformer, lightning arrester, current transformer, and disconnecting

switch. We wrapped it with a coil to give detail on the insulting part of these transformers.

And in some other components, we used sculptured bamboo to exactly copy the shape of

them especially that of circuit breaker which has a conical in shape part.

We also tried to search for the functions of each component and the reasons why do they

arranged or sequenced on that way? We believed that those queries will be the possible questions

that will be thrown to us on our defense.

The main parts of the design had already done, the power supplier and the receiver. So

what we did eventually was to fill those empty spaces. We put some trees that was made up of

coconut husk (bunot) and tattered clothes. We also had a park and bay walk. Actually, we even

went to Poro just to get a pebbles intended for our bay walk and flooring of our substation.
Consequently, we did the wiring right after we see our big community model. We used 9

volts battery as a source. We provide source from our transmission substation to the distribution

and down to the industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.

The feeling when we saw our work the moment we switched them on and they

simultaneously light brightly, and colorful was really SATISFYING! It made us reminisce those

hardships we encountered us we do our project. Those time management that usually not followed

because of the consistent incoming of additional school works and projects. Those sleep over

which usually ended up the work till 2 o’clock in the early morning. Those sleepy heads in the

school while the discussion is on-going. Those midnight snack on 7-eleven. Those running time

in market to purchase emergency materials. Those conceited people we encountered and called for

a fight. And those “ouch!” we howled every time the shoe glue stick between our fingers to the

extent that we then didn’t even recognize if what we’re removing in our finger is a dried shoe glue

or our skin. Those hardships were vanished and changed with a joy as our whole community model

were lighted up, shining, brightly and colorful.

A lot of good things were left within us because of this subject. Especially we build a team

and made it even stronger and most of all the knowledge and wisdom we gained. We realized now

why is it necessary for us to make a prototype design or model, not because only to comply for the

requirements, but rather because “along the way, as you do, you LEARN!”
