Artists Are Inspired

FOOD

PROBLEM
How do you express color? Color is one of the first things you notice about a work of art and
can cause an emotional response. How do historically famous
artist use color and how do they inspire you? This exercise is to
help you use complementary colors to create convincing
transitions of value and the illusion of 3 dimensional forms.

QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE; MIND MAP:

1. What is your favorite color? Why?
2. What type of food do you want to recreate… sweet, savory?
You must have a photo reference so choose something you can
get easily.
3. Do you want to create a realistic or abstract drawing? Do you
want to use realistic or abstract colors? Choose a color
scheme.
4. How does the way you represent color represent you?

ARTIST TO RESEARCH (CHOOSE 1):

The artist you choose should influence your final creation. You are
REQUIREMENTS:
NOT duplicating one of their piece but creating an original piece
1. Must have a photo reference
inspired by them.
2. Use color (Color Pencils,
1. Wayne Theibaud Oil/Soft Pastels, Watercolor)
2. Andy Warhol 3. 70% positive space
3. Paul Cezanne 4. Touch at least 3 sides of the
4. Claes Oldenburg picture plane
5. Giuseppe Arcimboldo 5. Strong VALUE; direct,
consistent light source
6. Dennis Wojtkiewicz
6. Only black and white media
7. Roberto Bernardi
7. Follows rules of composition
8. Tjalf Sparnaay
(rule of thirds)
9. Henri Matisse
8. Follows Timeline- 2 weeks
10. Franz Marc

EXPERIMENTS/OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES: Practice and make final decisions on composition, media, and
subject matter. You have the choice of media and paper (white, black, grey, or tan). You can also create
an altered surface for your piece. Make sure your feel comfortable with your choice of media and are
able to blend colors. You must show costume mixing of colors, a change in saturation as objects recede
and show strong color values. You will use an original photo reference of your choice of food, which is
receding into space within an environment of your choice defined by a clear light source. Using your
chosen original image a sense of depth will be created using several techniques; overlap, size variation,
sharpness/focus and color saturation.

CREATE: Once your final design has been approved, create your personal still life. Please refer back to
the rubric often to check your progress.
