Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace. The friars and the staff of the Shrine wish all the best to retiring Boston Police
Commissioner William Evans. We are grateful for his service and aware that we have been the
beneficiaries of the BPD’s many community-building efforts over the last five years. We are extremely
pleased with Mayor Walsh’s announcement that William Gross is the new Commissioner. Commissioner
Gross can be assured of our enthusiastic support of his leadership and our ongoing teamwork with his
officers.
Our work with the Boston Police is of two different types. First and foremost, we are interested in the
safety and security of all who visit the Shrine and those passing by on Arch and Otis Streets. Secondly, we
are interested in looking out for the various vulnerable demographics downtown, including and especially
the homeless and those subject to human trafficking.
We are proud to boast of this year’s Pope Francis Award recipient, The
Honorable Regina L. Quinlan-Doherty (ret.). Regina is an inspiration to those
who know her for her courage, conviction and devotion to the Catholic faith.
She served many years on the Superior Court, bringing justice to every
person who came before her, regardless of his or her economic status,
ethnicity or religious beliefs.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Ms. Lorrie Higgins will serve as Honorary chairs,
along with Angela Menino, Ginger McCourt and Kathy O’ Donnell. Joanne
Hidaka and Ben Niedermeyer are graciously serving as co-chairs again this
year. A heartfelt thank you to each of you.
