The President’s Desk

Hello Everyone,

This newsletter provides me with a chance to reflect on what [24]7 IO

has been able to achieve in the last few months particularly in relation to
the four big picture goals that were identified since the last newsletter.
The first area identified was increasing the quality of meetings, speeches
and evaluations. The second area was promoting our club to increase
memberships. The third was mentoring all roles and speakers to deliver
the highest quality performances and the fourth was to build a strong
network with other clubs. Since January, a number of strategies have
been put in place by the club, ideas have been generated and
opportunities have arisen that collectively have worked towards these
goals. I'm very confident in achieving these identified goals.

” The first area identified was increasin

the quality of meetin s, speeches
and evaluations.

[24]7 Inspired Moments

[24]7 Inspired Orators has come a long way in the past year since the
initiation of the club. I'm proud to say that we have increased our quality
of speeches. Our speakers are self-motivated and our members are
completing CC-CL projects and are venturing out for work on advanced
manuals. In the past year, the club has achieved several milestones. We
celebrated our 25th meeting and felicitated our member for completing
communication and leadership projects. The club is highly meticulous in
achieving its set guidelines and will go a long way with the high quality of
speakers it has produced.

Why
Toastmasters?

Having been an active member of Toastmasters for a year, the biggest benefits I have identified are as follows:

Leadership Skills - Learning how to lead by example & how to manage people from diverse
backgrounds

Listening Skills - This benefit is often overlooked. As a Toastmaster, you learn how to evaluate
speeches. This means learning how to actively listen with your eyes as well as your ears. In
today's distracted world, the skills of listening is ever more important & Toastmasters is one of the
few places where you can practice listening in a focused way

Confidence - The key to success in life is confidence. Building your communication, leadership &
listening skills naturally increases your confidence

Networking - I can honestly say that during my time in Toastmasters, I've met & become friends
with some of the most genuine & helpful people.

At Toastmasters, I learned the basic skills of communication. The art of formulating an effective
story with introduction, body and conclusion. The importance of body language. We get
immediately feedback on what we do well and how we can be more effective. And most
importantly, the experience of practice presenting in front of many people. As my communication
skills improved I also gained a lot of confidence

Being a Distinguished Club
Three things to celebrate.

“Distinguished” ...the word itself commands respect. As it rolls off the tongue, one can feel the weight, gravitas
and power. Being Distinguished is being a cut above, a class apart and a shade different.
When a club becomes Distinguished, it not only reaches a milestone but also proclaims its arrival to the world as a
serious, mature and committed club which is here to make a difference.

As I look back at this journey; here is what has made us truly “Distinguished”:

When standards need to be maintained again and again and again….:

Each meeting is like leading an orchestra to deliver the same piece of music with unpredictable instruments,
audience and musicians. Things keep going wrong. Work pressures, lack of resources, unplanned eventualities, lack of
motivation and so on. Sometimes we fought, argued and pushed and other times we motivated, cajoled and
influenced. Yet we managed to keep the momentum going. We delivered club meetings upholding the quality and
standards.
The President, VPE and council member's relentless efforts taught us the powerful lesson of persistence.
Taking a mantle is easy, delivering a superlative event is easy but doing this over and over again is what makes us
Distinguished.

What happens after “I came, I spoke, I bombed”.

Our stage of Toastmasters was a witness to many spectacular failures. From the stammers and blink and forget
moments of first timers to the “Oh I thought this was a cakewalk” moments of the stalwarts. We saw spectacular
bumbling, fumbling, bloopers, embarrassments and blunders. We celebrated them as much as the perfect speeches.
There was courage and motivation.
Spiritual masters deem being vulnerable and accepting failure as the highest learning. We saw this beautifully
embraced and demonstrated.
We are not only Distinguished because we created a platform where people survived failure. We are Distinguished
because most of us succeeded; yet wanted to try something bigger and fail.

When Feedback becomes Feedforward

Feedback is a dreaded term in management parlance. It is synonymous with correction, judgment and
resistance. At Toastmasters; we changed that. Feedback was treated like a precious gift.
I saw Evaluators, Mentors and TAG members provide insights with an urge to motivate and guide. I saw a hunger which
kept people in the audi long after the session had ended. I saw intense conversations around “what you could have
done better”. I saw selflessness and mindfulness in the process of both giving and receiving evaluations.
We learnt to embrace feedback, no matter how critical. That is what makes us Distinguished.

When transformations happen.

From “Public speaking is my greatest fear” to “I need more slots to speak.”
From “ I don't see myself as a leader” to “I can take on any role”.
We have witnessed people transforming in front of our eyes and becoming vocal, confident and charismatic. We have
seen club members take strides as public speakers, organizers, leaders and professionals.

We are Distinguished because we could infuse each and every-one with a belief : “ I can do”.

In Conclusion.
This is just a beginning. Here is wishing all the club members many more “Distinguished” milestones.

Fearless
Public speaking
When we first start speaking it's natural to ask the question “how can I become more confident at
public speaking?” “How can I become fearless as a speaker?” When adrenaline gets into our body when we're
nervous it plays havoc with our abilities to act normally. We just want to be good enough, to get through our
public speaking without showing the audience our nerves.

Most public speakers stress and struggle about trying to “seem confident” and “look fearless”, irrespective of
how they're feeling inside. They often fall into the trap of pushing nerves away to show the audience a plastic
sheen of confident public speaking. But so long as you're pushing away your fears and nerves, you're acting,
rather than connecting with your audience.

Passion is what we remember about a speaker – not their confidence. Audiences are enthralled by delicious,
humble, genuine, and emotional public speaking experiences, so if you really want to move your audience,
that's where you need to live as a speakers.

Rather than pushing away your nerves and becoming a robot speaker who's technically “very good” and
seems “very confident”, I'd like to show you how to become a Fearless speaker, who uses your nervous energy
for good, rather than pushing it away.

What is the recipe for confident, fearlessness public speaking?

Being fearless is not about a lack of fear. It's about taking that fear and transforming it into excitement
and energy around your message. It's like fire. We can either look at the fire and say “oh, that might burn
something, I have to put it out…” in which case we end up with a sad pile of cinders. Or we can stick a barbecue
on top of the fire and turn it into something useful for ourselves and our friends.
In a similar way, your fire as a speaker could be used in the right way to inspire your audience. From here you
find deeply confident public speaking, rather than the superficial confidence that comes with 'managing'
your nerves. On a practical level, then, how do you develop fearless, confident public speaking?

Ingredient #1 Positive Mental Imagery

Psychologists have found that deeply confident public speakers actually see themselves that
way in their mental imagery. If your mental imagery is constantly reinforcing your lack of
confidence, this is what will show up in your speaking.

Ingredient #2 Visualizing Public Speaking Success

Create that positive affirmative space by literally seeing yourself presenting with confidence.
Think your own inner movie… no subtitles necessary.

Ingredient #3 Demon Slaying

The inner critic or 'inner demon' is the negative inner dialogue that
can surround your speaking. Most of us have some kind of inner dialogue
that diminishes our confidence as a speaker, if we chose to believe it.

What attitude did
you bring in today?
Success, as they say, is a mind game. Those who succeed are the ones who have overpowered the mental
barriers that stop them from reaching out and grabbing their dreams.
Limitations are there only in the mind and often times, these are self-erected. If you listen to your fears, you
will die never knowing what a great person you might have been.

Public speaking is something that has always been alien to me. As an introvert, throughout my
adult life, I have been finding it hard to communicate with confidence, in front of people I haven't been
acquainted with; and that's where one must prioritize in putting his best foot forward and presenting
himself at his finest.
15 days into the company, my presentation skills were evaluated based on a 5-minute
presentation of one of my old projects, where the structure, content, flow of my presentation, speech-
rate were critiqued, especially the fillers I use. With a work experience of 3 years, I have not been
shown a clearer picture as to where my shortcomings are in getting my point across.
That was when I decided to attend the TM meeting as a guest which gave me a brief as to how
TMI grooms you into being a better communicator and a leader. They shared their personal
experience by elaborating on how TMI has enabled them in becoming a better communicator and
leader.
