Lesson Title: Shapes and Solids 1st TEKS (6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to: (A) classify and sort regular and irregular two-dimensional shapes based on attributes using informal geometric language; (B) distinguish between attributes that define a two-dimensional or three-dimensional figure and attributes that do not define the shape; (C) create two-dimensional figures, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares, as special rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons; (D) identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares, as special rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons and describe their attributes using formal geometric language; (E) identify three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms, and describe their attributes using formal geometric language ELPS Listening: 2.C Learn new language structures, expressions, and basic and academic vocabulary heard during classroom instruction and interactions Speaking: 3.D Speak using grade-level content area vocabulary in context to internalize new English words and build academic language proficiency 3.E Share information in cooperative learning interactions 3.G Express opinions, ideas, and feelings ranging from communicating single words and short phrases to participating in extended discussions on a variety of social and grade- appropriate academic topics Reading: 4.F Use visual and contextual support and support from peers and teachers to read grade- appropriate content area text, enhance and confirm understanding, and develop vocabulary, grasp of language structures, and background knowledge needed to comprehend increasingly challenging language Writing: 5.B Write using newly acquired basic vocabulary and content-based grade-level vocabulary Key Vocabulary Materials 1. two-dimensional shapes Clay 2. three-dimensional solid Shapes Coloring Worksheet 3. regular two-dimensional shape Coloring Pencils or Crayons 4. irregular two-dimensional shapes PowerPoint Fill in the Blank Template 5. circles Notebook 6. triangles Pencil 7. rectangles Vocabulary Table Template 8. squares Shapes and Solids Reading Print Out 9. rhombuses 10. hexagons Scissors 11. spheres Glue Stick 12. cones Tablet 13. cylinders Mini White Boards 14. rectangular prisms Dry Erase Markers 15. cubes White Board Eraser 16. triangular prisms Elmo (for Teacher) Lesson Length 5 days approximately or 5 five hours Safety and Precautions Technology Students must be supervised at all times and A minimum of 7 tablets for the Kahoot Online Game will mainly when using electronic devices and clay. be required (or a computer lab if tablets are not available) and an Elmo for teacher use during the Pyramid Game. Gifted Students Students will Peer Tutor a classmate in each task. Special Needs Students Students will be given extra time to finish each assignment or task without compromising their grades, they will be allowed to go to Content Mastery, they have the option to work in groups or individually and work can also be shortened. ESL Students Students will be given extra time to finish each assignment or task without compromising their grades and they will have the option to work in groups or individually. ENGAGE: Each pair of students will receive 4 sticks of clay. Teacher will write on the board the instructions: “Use half of each stick of clay to build a square, cube, cylinder and circle. Use the other half of each stick of clay to build a sphere, cone, rhombus and triangle. Teacher will monitor their thinking and prior knowledge as she walks around the classroom during the activity. After 10 minutes, teacher will project the pictures on the screen and will let them try again. Students will make connections and do better once they see the visual. EXPLORE: Students will be given a worksheet to match the name of shape and solid with the picture and color according to instructions. After they are done and have shown their work to the teacher, they will get in groups to play the Pyramid Game. The teacher will draw a pyramid in the white board with ten levels and students will try to reach to the last one to get extra points in the next formal assessment. Teacher will describe the solid or shape in a sentence shown through the ELMO on the screen and each group will write down the answer in a mini white board. The groups with the right answer will move up and the groups with wrong answers will remain in the same level. There will only be a maximum of 10 descriptions, therefore 10 levels in the pyramid, for a maximum amount of 10 points. At this point, when students have a wrong answer teacher can scaffold for a better understanding. EXPLAIN: Students will paste a handout in their notebooks that will be filled out by following a PowerPoint Presentation explained by the teacher. After they finish this activity, students will get in groups. Using one tablet per group, they will be shown how to go to kahoot.it which is an online game that contains made quizzes by other teachers, or the option to create a new one. Kahoot also allows to place images for guidance. Students will select an answer choice out of four to win points. The music that the program uses and its scoreboard offers the students a feeling of competition. While they are playing the game, teachers have an opportunity to review and clarify the material covered in the PowerPoint, worksheet, pyramid game and clay. ELABORATE: Students will be given a reading passage about shapes and solids. The reading will contain key vocabulary with pictures and definitions. Students will also receive a vocabulary template that needs to be pasted in their notebooks. The table is divided in "Word, Picture and Definition". The words and definitions to fill out this table will be taken out from the reading passage and the pictures will be cut and pasted. This activity will be completed individually. EVALUATE: Informal Assessment: Students will work on a "Build a House Project" during the weekend with the help of their parents or any relatives. They will build a house using at least at least 5 two-dimensional shapes and at least 5 three-dimensional solids and place it on a hard surface. They can use any crafting supplies (with adult supervision) such as clay, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, cardboard, styrofoam, foam sheets, etc. Students will be graded based on a holistic rubric as they present their final product. Formal Assessment: Students will match pictures and definitions with different types of shapes and solids. Conclusion of the Lesson Students must have learned how to identify and classify two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids and describe their properties.
