Culturally Responsive

Teaching
What is it?
Culturally responsive teaching is a student-centered
approach to teaching in which the unique backgrounds
and cultures of students are acknowledged, embraced
and infused into all aspects of the learning process

How can teachers incorporate it?

- Be aware of the different cultures in the classroom
o send home a questionnaire at the beginning of
the school year that includes questions about
       any important celebrations
- Acknowledge cultural celebrations that may be of
importance to your students, through a variety of
different methods:
o art activity (paint divas or make rangolis for
Diwali, make lanterns or paper dragons
        for Chinese New Year, etc)
     o colouring page
     o reading comprehension
     o short story or book
     o YouTube clip or movie
     o games
- Have materials in the classroom that represent
different cultures
- Host Multicultural and World Food Days
- Represent the different cultures in the classroom
through:
     o posters
     o signs in different languages
     o flags of the world
o student projects and student created art work
- Translate classroom newsletters into your students L1s,
if possible
- Every month explore one or two new cultures with your
students and have students create visual displays about
their learning
