Aims and Scope
AJARE publishes original research articles relating to all aspects of agricultural, resource and environmental
economics. The emphasis is on quantitative work, which is novel and policy relevant. AJARE is an
international journal and welcomes studies that use empirical data from any part of the world. However, the
Editors take special interest in studies that reflect the Australasian, Asian, and Pacific context of many of
AJARE’s readers and contributors. The editorial objectives of AJARE are to maintain a high standard of
analytical rigor while offering sufficient variety of content to appeal to a broad spectrum of both academic
and professional economists and policymakers.
Editorial Review and Acceptance
AJARE conducts a comprehensive, double-blinded peer review process. All submitted papers are pre-
screened by the Editors and some papers may be immediately “desk” rejected, on the grounds that they are
not considered to be a good fit for AJARE in terms of topic or methodology, or they have insufficient link
with the body of research previously published in the journal. Papers that fall short of AJARE’s high
standards, in terms of methodological rigor or the contribution or value added to the literature, are also desk
rejected. The Editors’ decisions about which manuscripts are accepted for publication are final.
Manuscripts should be written in a clear, concise, direct style. Where contributions are judged as acceptable
for publication on the basis of content, the Editors and Publisher reserve the right to modify typescripts to
eliminate ambiguity and repetition and improve communication between author and reader.

Data storage and documentation

Analyses published in AJARE are expected to be replicable by other scholars. To this end, authors are
expected to document their data sources, models, and estimation procedures as thoroughly as possible, and to
make the data used available to others for replication purposes. Our policy is to encourage authors to submit
major databases and code used to conduct the data analyses in their paper. Please read the Data and Code
Availability Policy (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1467-
8489/homepage/data_and_code_availability_policy_2011.pdf). When submitting your paper, follow the
instructions on ScholarOne to upload these files. If an exception to this rule is desired, for example due to
confidentiality of data, this should be noted in the article, and the reasons for seeking an exception should be
explicitly noted in the cover letter at time of submission.
Prior Publication Policy
For the journal's policy regarding the prior publication of submitted manuscripts, please click here
(http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/societyimages/ajare/AJARE%20prior%20publication%20policy.pdf).
Send Us Your Past Reviewer Reports
To improve the speed and quality of decisions, the journal encourages authors to include editors' letters and
referee reports from failed submissions at other journals, provided that authors first obtain the appropriate
permissions to share such letters and reports. This material from past submissions can be included as part of
the cover letter when first submitting to AJARE and it is helpful to include a commentary on how any
recommended revisions to the paper have been dealt with in the newly-submitted version. The journal
reserves the right to use its own referees and provide these referees with copies of this correspondence.
3. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Conflict of Interest Statement. Authors must indicate whether there is a conflict of interest when lodging
their submission via the ScholarOne Manuscript submission website. If there is a conflict of interest, the
author must clearly identify the conflict in their covering letter that declares any grants or other sources of
funding that support reported research, as well as any relevant industrial links or affiliations that the author
may have. Any potential conflicts of interest will be held in confidence while the paper is under review and
will not influence the editorial decision but, if the article is accepted for publication, the Editor will consider
whether such information needs to be communicated to the reader.

Plagiarism Detection. The journal employs a plagiarism detection system. By submitting your manuscript to
this journal you accept that your manuscript may be screened for plagiarism against previously published
works.
Please be advised that we experienced an unexpected issue that occurred on Saturday and Sunday January 20th and 21st that

4. MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
Manuscripts should be submitted in a form suitable for sending anonymously to reviewers (as may be
required). The preferred word length of manuscripts at time of first submission is between 6,000 and 10,000
words, inclusive of Abstract, Article, References, Endnotes, Figures and Tables. The Abstract,
Acknowledgements, Text, References and Endnotes must be double-spaced.

Author Services
Prior to submission, we encourage you to browse the ‘Author Resources’ section of the Wiley ‘Author
Services’ website: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/default.asp
(http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/default.asp). This site includes useful information covering such
topics as copyright matters, ethics, electronic artwork guidelines, and how to optimise articles for search
engines.
Pre-acceptance English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited
before submission to improve the English. Visit our site (http://wileyeditingservices.com/en/) to learn about
the options. All services are paid for and arranged by the author. Please note using the Wiley English
Language Editing Service does not guarantee that your paper will be accepted by this journal.
Optimising Your Article for Search Engines
Many students and researchers looking for information online will use search engines such as Google, Yahoo
or similar. By optimising your article for search engines, you will increase the chance of someone finding it.
This in turn will make it more likely to be viewed and/or cited in another work. We have compiled these
guidelines (http://www.wiley.com/legacy/wileyblackwell/pdf/SEOforAuthorsLINKSrev.pdf) to enable
you to maximise the web-friendliness of the most public part of your article.
Title page
The title page should contain (i) a short informative that contains the major key words. The title should not
contain abbreviations; (ii) the full names of the authors; (iii) the author's institutional affiliations at which the
work was carried out; (iv) the full postal and email address, plus telephone number, of the author to whom
correspondence about the manuscript should be sent; (v) acknowledgements. The present address of any
author, if different from that where the work was carried out, should be supplied in a footnote.

Acknowledgements
The source of financial grants and other funding must be acknowledged, including a frank declaration of the
authors’ industrial links and affiliations. The contribution of colleagues or institutions should also be
acknowledged. Personal thanks and thanks to anonymous reviewers are not appropriate.
Acknowledgements are not to be included in the article file, they are to be added to the Title Page which
remains blinded from review.
Main text
As papers are double-blind peer reviewed the main text file should not include any information that might
identify the authors. All author names and Acknowledgements must be removed from the article file.
Abstract and key words
All manuscript categories must have an abstract of 200 or fewer words that states the purpose, basic
procedures, main findings and principal conclusions of the study. The abstract should not contain
abbreviations or references.
Five key words or terms, for the purposes of indexing, should be supplied below the abstract, in alphabetical
order.
Please be advised that we experienced an unexpected issue that occurred on Saturday and Sunday January 20th and 21st that
caused the site to be down for an extended period of time and affected the ability of users to access content on Wiley Online

References
Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics uses the parenthetical (author date) system of

referencing - examples are given below. In the text, give the author’s name followed by the year in
parentheses: Smith (2000). If there are two authors, use ‘and’: Smith and Jones (2001) or (Smith and Jones
2001). When reference is made to a work by three or more authors, the first name followed by et al. should be
used: MacDonald et al. (2002).
Direct quotes should be identified in single quotation marks. Page numbers must be included after the year
for quoted material; for example: (Smith and Jones 2001, p. 77)
In the reference list, references should be listed in alphabetical order. Authors are responsible for the accuracy
of the references. In the reference list, cite the names of all authors, do not use et al. Do not use ibid. or op cit.
Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited
in the text only (e.g. Smith A 2000, unpublished data or Anthony Smith, AARES, pers. comm.). All citations
mentioned in the text, tables or figures must be listed in the reference list.

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote (http://www.endnote.com/) or Reference Manager

incorporated in the file name. Figures files should be at least 300 dpi supplied as jpg or tiff.

Figure legends
Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the figure and its legend must be understandable without
reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of
measurement.
Appendices
These should be uploaded as a separate file, numbered in Roman numerals and referred to in the text. All
Appendix content will be published online only as supporting content.
Supporting Information
Supporting information is not essential to the article but provides greater depth and background and may
include tables, figures, videos, datasets, etc. This material can be submitted with your manuscript, and will
appear online, without editing or typesetting. Guidelines on how to prepare this material and which formats
and files sizes are acceptable can be found at: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/suppmat.asp
(http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/suppmat.asp).
Please note that the provision of supporting information is not encouraged as a general rule. It will be
assessed critically by reviewers and editors and will only be accepted if it is essential.
6. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ajare

• A minimum of two files need to be included upon submission: A title page file that includes authors’ details
and an anonymized main text file that includes all required elements of the text.
• The main text file is to be kept anonymized at all stages of submission.
Accepted file types
The journal accepts submissions in Word, PDF and LaTeX.
LaTeX Article Submission
Please use “article” class for LaTeX submissions and include any associated packages/files with the
submitted LaTeX source files. Please also include a PDF of the manuscript. Do not add coding to “force” line
breaks or the positioning of “floats”, as this will need to be removed in the conversion of the file to XML. As
articles undergo considerable conversion and transformation during production, we achieve the most efficient
processing if articles are presented in as generic a form as possible.

LaTeX Bibliography
Authors may use a citation package such as BibTeX and natbib.sty. Please use the appropriate citation style
for the journal to help the reviewers assess your article. There is no bespoke “.bst” file for AJARE. Please
provide all the necessary bibliographic information in a standard format. This will allow for clearer
conversion and formatting by the typesetters.

Early View
The journal offers rapid speed to publication via Wiley’s Early View service. Early View articles are complete
full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Early View articles are
complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final
corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online
publication. Early View articles are given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be
cited and tracked before allocation to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can
continue to be used to cite and access the article. More information about DOIs can be found at
http://www.doi.org/faq.html (http://www.doi.org/faq.html).
