Pedagogy

Online Activity This class is an online asynchronous course where all of the
materials will be available to the student ahead of time. The
lecture is a short clip that is recorded by the teacher. The video
will include information based on why the government creates
laws and an individual’s rights regarding the law. After the
student has watched the video they will participate in a
simulation activity. In the simulation they will participate as a
member of congress.

The students will be directed to iCivics and they can partake in

the “LawCraft” simulation with or without an account. This
simulation will take between 15 and 30 minutes. If they create
their own account then they will be able to save their progress in
the simulation. If they choose not to then they will have to finish
in one sitting. The students will begin a new game and the
instructions will be provided.

They will act as a member of Congress from any state that they
choose. The student will be able to design and name their
member of Congress where they will choose from the Senate or
the House of Representatives. The individuals that the student
will represent will bring issues that are important to their
attention. So they will choose an issue that they believe is
important to their constituents. They will take their law all the
way to the legislative process. Their goal is to get the president
to sign their bill. The student will have the opportunity at the
end of the simulation to print off their bill if they succeed.

Once the students have completed the simulation, they will be

able to understand the process of passing a bill into a law. They
are able to understand the depths of making and carrying out
laws. The student will save their simulation bill certificate and
upload or email it to their teacher for verification. As the last
part, they will create a discussion post where they briefly discuss
what they have learned and their opinion on the simulation.
After they have submitted their post they will comment on two
other posts and tell them their favorite part of the simulation.
