This chapter describes the expansion and upgrade of the OptiX OSN 3500 in two
parts:
Equipment expansion and upgrade
Network expansion and upgrade
The OptiX OSN 3500 provides three protection groups at the same time, to support
the TPS protection to three kinds of service in a subrack. For the TPS configuration
of each kind of service, see section A.3 “Equipment-Level Protection
Configuration Requirements”.
Case Description
Expand the tributary board of NE3 and provide TPS, as shown in Figure 7-1. The
expansion board PQ1 is in slot 3, its two interface boards D75S are in slot 21 and
slot 22 respectively. The protection PQ1 is in slot 1 to provide TPS for E1 services
of slot 2 and slot 3.

Procedure
Caution
The system reserves slots for processing boards and corresponding interface
boards.
The processing board should match the interface board.
The system is capable of lower order cross-connect processing.
Step Action
1 Check the working status of the expansion board and check whether the software
is compliant.
2 Install related hardware, such as inserting boards and cabling.
3 Configure the TPS protection group through NM or add the tributary board to
this protection group.
4 Configure services on the tributary board.
Case Description
It is simple to upgrade the Ethernet service. First, select the expansion board and
related slot according to the service requirement and transmission distance.
The case in chapter 3 requires transmitting EPL service between NE3 and NE5.
NE3 and NE5 need to access two 100 Mbit/s Ethernet electrical interface service
respectively, and each service occupies a 10 Mbit/s bandwidth.
Add Ethernet board EFS4 to expand the Ethernet service. Add an EFS4 in NE3 to
provide four 100 Mbit/s Ethernet electrical interfaces, as shown in Figure 7-2. Add
an EFS4 in NE5 to provide four 100 Mbit/s Ethernet electrical interfaces, as shown
in Figure 7-3.

Case Description
It is simple to upgrade the ATM service. First, select the expansion board and
related slot according to the service requirement and transmission distance.
The case in chapter 3 requires transmitting ATM service in the network. NE2, NE3,
and NE4 access ATM services of 155 Mbit/s optical interface and need to converge
them into the ATM switch in NE1. All ATM services share the 155 Mbit/s
bandwidth of the ring.
To realize the expansion of ATM service, add the ADQ1 board in NE1, NE2, NE3,
and NE4 respectively. Figure 7-4 shows adding the ADQ1 in NE1 to provide four
155 Mbit/s ATM optical interfaces. Add the ADQ1 board in other NEs likewise.

Case Description
It is easy to upgrade SAN and video services. First, select the expansion board and
related slot according to the service requirement and transmission distance.
The case in Chapter 3 requires transparent transmission of SAN services in the
network. NE3 needs to access two ESCON services and transmit them
transparently to NE4.
To realize the expansion of SAN service, add SAN service boards on NE3 and NE4.
As shown in Figure 7-5, add an MST4 board on NE3 to provide four 622 Mbit/s
optical interfaces. Add the MST4 board on NE4 likewise.

Procedure
Follow the steps below to perform SAN service expansion.
Step Action
1 Check the working status of the expansion board and check whether the software

2 Install related hardware, including inserting expansion boards and cabling.
Step Action
Caution
The increase of boards should be within the limit of slots or optical interfaces.
When configuring a multiplex section ring, note the limitation of paired slots. The
multiplex section ring can only be formed between the optical interfaces on two
optical boards in paired slots, and the number of the optical interface on one board
is the same as that on the other board.
Case Description
Table 7-1 gives two modes for line expansion. The first mode is preferred because it
is simpler and will not affect service.

Procedure of Mode 1
Follow the steps below to perform line rate expansion.
Step Action
1 Check the working status of the expansion board and check whether the software
is compliant.
2 Use NM to check whether a slot is occupied and make sure the slot to be
configured as ADM has no pair restriction. The boards that form an ADM should
be inserted in paired slots and configured at paired optical interfaces.
3 Insert the SL64 boards in slot 8 and slot 11, and then connect the boards with
fibers.
4 Configure services.
5 Check whether NE works normally.
Procedure of Mode 2
Follow the steps below to perform line rate expansion.
Caution
The upgrade may interrupt services, so carry on the operation during a period of
small traffic under the guidance of technical engineer from Huawei.
When upgrading line rate of a ring network, the connected boards in adjacent
NEs must be upgraded simultaneously. Otherwise, the upgrade may fail due to
the line rate mismatch.
Before replacing a board, always remove the fiber on it.
Step Action
1 Check the working status of the expansion board and check whether the software
is compliant.
2 If more than 40 ECC channels are occupied, the slot should be arranged in
advance and the ECC channel of needless optical interfaces should be disabled.
3 In line rate upgrade, the adjacent NEs should be upgraded at the same time.
Replace the low-rate boards with the high-rate boards.
4 After replacing the boards, the related slots should be configured according to
new boards.
5 Re-configure services, especially the parameters of service flow and protection
properties.
6 For a ring, perform the upgrade to the next station along the primary ring. For a
chain, perform the upgrade to the next station along the line. The adjacent NEs
should be upgraded simultaneously to shorten the service interruption duration.
The upgrade is complete when all related boards are replaced in the network.
7 After the upgrade, test whether the network works normally.
The OptiX OSN 3500 provides four kinds of cross-connect board: GXCSA,
EXCSA, UXCSA and UXCSB. The EXCSA and UXCSA/UXCSB are the same in
their total access capacity but different in lower cross-connect capacity. In addition,
the UXCSA does not support extended subracks but the UXCSB does. Table 7-2
shows the cross-connect and access capacities of the four boards.
The upgrade of cross-connect capacity can enhance the system access capability.
Moreover, the upgrade needs not to change the bus configuration of the backplane,
because the system supports four 10 Gbit/s slots and four 2.5 Gbit/s slots
automatically when it use EXCSA, UXCSA or UXCSB.
Case Description
In the example shown in chapter 3, if the cross-connect capacity is insufficient with
GXCSA boards, you can upgrade the cross-connect boards to meet the requirement,
that is, upgrade GXCSA boards in slot 9 and slot 10 to EXCSA boards.
Figure 7-8 shows the slot access capacity with GXCSA boards, and Figure 7-9
shows the slot access capacity with EXCSA boards.

Procedure
Caution
The NE software is compatible with GXCSA, EXCSA, UXCSA and UXCSB.
However, GXCSA, EXCSA, UXCSA and UXCSB are not allowed to co-exist for a
long time in an NE except during the upgrading.
The cross-connect board cannot be replaced by GXCSA after it is configured as
EXCSA, UXCSA or UXCSB (that is, insert a 2.5 Gbit/s board in slot 5 or 13 and a
10 Gbit/s board in slot 7 or 12). If you want to revert to GXCSA, you have to delete
EXCSA, UXCSA or UXCSB boards.
Step Action
1 Prepare two EXCSA boards. Check the working status of the expansion board
and check whether the software is compliant.
2 Check the working status of the two GXCSA boards by querying on NM or
observing board indicators.
3 Delete the standby GXCSA board through NM, and add EXCSA board.
4 Replace the standby GXCSA board with the EXCSA board. When the alarm
HSC_UNAVAIL disappears, it means the EXCSA works normally.
5 Switch the EXCSA to the active board forcedly through NM.
6 Repeat steps 3 to 5 to replace the other GXCSA with the EXCSA.
7 On NM, you can query whether slot 7 and slot 12 allow creating STM-64 service
boards. If so, the upgrade succeeds.
Case Description
NE1 is the central station in the network described in chapter 3. Now, NE1 is
required to add/drop extra 504 x 2 Mbit/s services. As a result, eight PQ1 boards are
required. However, the reserved slot (slot 13) in the subrack fails to hold eight
tributary boards (PQ1). In this case, you can add an extended subrack to solve the
problem.
To support the extended subrack, you need to upgrade the cross-connect board from
GXCSA to UXCSB. For details, see section 7.1.6 “Cross-Connect Capacity
Expansion and Upgrade”.
The extended subrack is an OptiX OSN 3500 subrack, configured with the
cross-connect board XCE (1+1 hot backup) and 8 PQ1 boards and 16 D75S
interface boards. To support TPS protection for the PQ1 board, configure another
PQ1 board in slot 1 Figure 7-10 shows the configuration of the extended subrack.

Caution
If the cabinet in NE1 has no enough space to hold the extended subrack, add a new
cabinet.
The extended subrack supports at most 1.25 Gbit/s cross-connect and grooming
capability.
The extended subrack supports TPS for E1 services.
Step Action
1 Upgrade the cross-connect board in the main subrack to UXCSB. For details, see
section 7.1.6 “Cross-Connect Capacity Expansion and Upgrade”.
2 Install the extended subrack in the cabinet and connect the power supply unit at
the top of the cabinet to the PIU board of the extended subrack.
3 Connect the main subrack to the extended subrack through the service cable.
Then, route the cable.
4 Connect the AUX board on the main subrack to that on the extended subrack
through a network cable, which enables the main subrack to manage the
extended one.
5 Insert 8 PQ1 boards and 16 D75S interface boards in the extended subrack.
6 Configure services for the new tributary boards through NM.
