TRIFLES

My response is about a tragic comedy play entitled, Trifles by Susan Glaspell. The title of
the play is oozing with irony as it comes from this gem of a line from Hale: "Well, women are used
to worrying about trifles" .He says this in response to the fact that Mrs. Wright seems to be more
worried about her preserves bursting than the fact that she is being held for murder. Reflecting
on Mrs. Wright as the main character of the play, this is my response about the play based on the
character itself.

Mrs. Wright is a character not present at the screen, but for me, posed a great importance
in the whole storyline. In the story, Mrs. Wright was portrayed as a very typical country-bound
woman in a remote place. She was apparently well-known among the girls and was considered
lively before her marriage. Shortly after her marriage, Mrs. Wright adopted the attitude of a
battered woman. It was evident in her lack of upkeep in the home, in herself, and even in her
stitching. At this point, Mrs. Wright had murdered Mr. Wright in accordance to the dominance
depicted by the men. I agree with her reaction of murdering her husband as this conveys a
message that not all women are helpless and it brings out the bold side of a woman. Mrs. Wright
did not feel guilty for her actions at all as she was calmly seated on the rocking chair after
strangling her husband to death. It is very rare to see a women of such behavior but only in Trifles
I admired the character of a bold young lady who can go up to any extent just to live her life.

What inspired me to choose Mrs. Wright as my analyzing feature of the play is her struggle
for freedom due to spiral depression as a result of abuse and gender bias that has ended up in a
really bad tragedy. Recalling the incident of Mr. Wright taking the canary out just to wring its neck
made Mrs. Wright to put a stop to all the abusive acts and dominance in which ends up in the
murder of Mr. Wright. This is the most rationale act that she could have taken to enlighten men
about the husband’s domination over their wives in that era. Even till date, there are cases of wife
abuse growing rampantly and this act taken by Mrs. Wright could be an example of the
consequences that the men can face once the women are fighting for their equal rights. I could
imagine the dominance after reading and putting myself in the shoes of Mrs. Wright. In short, Mrs.
Wright empowered the role of a women through this act.

This response clearly states who is Mrs. Wright and how she was portrayed in the play
alongside with what do I like the most about the character. Mrs. Wright really had a vital role in
conveying the moral values from the story and also as an inspiration to women that humans
should have equal rights.
