Synthetic resign glues replaced protein and starch glues for
plywood manufacture, with urea formaldehyde predominating
because of price, properties and ease of application. Australian
mills once used tannin formaldehyde resigns or casein and

Urea formaldehyde glues are extensively used for interior and
intermediate grade bonding, which covers the majority of
hardwood plywood produced. Formulas differ somewhat and
can be adapted to meet specific conditions.
Polyvinyl acetate glues and also polyvinyl acetate/urea
formaldehyde glues are used for edge jointing and veneering.
Polyvinyl acetate glues resistant to boiling water are available.
Melamine formaldehyde glues are not extensively used for
plywood gluing but are used where a high grade bond is
required, and where black phenolic glues cannot be tolerated.
They are used to fortified urea-formaldehyde glues to increase
the weathering resistance of the bond. The largest application
of the melamine formaldehyde resin is in the production of
decorative overlays.
Phenol-formaldehyde glues are standard for exterior bonds.
With a glue properly formulated for exterior use and suitably
employed, no exposure conditions or laboratory testes are
known which will degrade hot pressed phenolic glue bonds
without destroying the adjacent wood layers.(Baldwin
1981) Phenolic glues are also used for impregnating veneers
and paper overlays for plywood.
Resorcinol-formaldehyde and phenol/resorcinol-formaldehyde
glues are similar to phenolic glues in quality of performance but
being more reactive, can be cured at room temperature. They
are more expensive than phenolic glues, and therefore limited

STRAWBOARD guide
A strawboard panel is a rigid building panel made of a solid
core of compressed wheat (or rice) straw covered with
recycled paper liners which are stuck to both sides with non-
toxic, water-based glue. A standard strawboard panel
measures 4 feet by 8 feet by 2¼ inches thick and weighs 120
poundw; custom sizes are also available, from 1 to 3 inches
thick and from 3 to 12 feet long. Strawboard panels make an
excellent alternative to timber for frame structures, interior
partition walls, floors, load and non-bearing ceilings, roofs, and
prefabricated buildings.

Asbestos cement boards.
These are made by moulding under pressure mix of ordinary
Portland cement and asbestos fibre. The boards are usually
1.22 metre wide 3 mm to 6 mm in thickness and up to 2.44
metre long. It has dense hard surfaces. The exposed surface is
finished smooth. The sheets may be in the colour of plain
cement or any other colour, with plain finish or with tiles cut on
its surface or with marble finish. The sheets can be sawed and
nailed with ease. These provide a nice wall covering with fire
resistant properties. Asbestors is used for electric insulation
and heat insulation.
