CHAPTER ONE

Background of the study

Technology development is always been the encouragement for social life of man.

It always caught the attention of society for the development of social networking sites.

Researchers had conducted studies to precise the impacts of social media sites on the

users and expose both brilliant and dim angles. Therefore, the world gained open access

to the Internet due to the breakneck progression of information

One of the most paramount and recognized platforms used on the Internet is

Facebook.

Facebook is the most popular social media craze, it has over 1.94 billion active

monthly users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4, 2004, when a 19-

year-old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the radical site to

connect Harvard University students (Grossman, 2010). But later, this site allows users to

build social networks with hundreds or even thousands of people around the world of

which university students are one of the primary demographics using Facebook, with

features such as photos, wall posts, and status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to

those who want to connect with their friends (Gold, 2011).

Even though Facebook is now used by a wider variety of users, university

students are still its “enthusiastic devotees”. Results from a recent paper Ellison et al.

(2007) reported that 94% of college students are active Facebook users, spending 60-90

minutes online each day communicating with their Friends List of 150–200 people. So,

this research assesses the effects of Facebook to the Senior High School Students of

Divine Mercy College Foundation, Inc.

Significance of the Study

In today’s continuous development of technology, without a definite study,

research and exploration, one will find it impediment in knowing its negative effect to the

students. Facebook plays a vital role in our society. It contributes a massive impact to the

mind of the users. Given this social status this would probably worth higher value and

great justification for researchers. This study may help to provide the students in

developing their knowledge to guide them from possible poor effects of it. This research

may also be useful to the parents by advising their children of the effects of Facebook.

In addition, everyone sees Facebook as a distraction that led the students to hold

back on their school works. Anonymous students confessed that visiting Facebook during

class helps them deal with boredom. This study will also provide information on the

impact of Facebook to the Senior High School students’ academic performance.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

Research focused in the assessment of the Senior High School students of Divine

Mercy College Foundation, Inc. as the respondents with regards to the effects of

Facebook to their everyday life. This institution is selected as a site of the current study

due to the fact that it is within the researchers’ authority with a quiet large number of

students for a total estimated population of 1000 as data of the campus Registrar’s Office

and no study has been conducted on this topic in the Senior High School.

However, the study is limited only to Facebook. The study did not include other

social media sites.

Theoretical Framework

Figure 1
Theoretical Framework
Uses of Gratification Theory (Blumler and Katz, 1974)

The researchers will discuss their topic through the aid of Uses and Gratification

Theory of Blumber and Katz in 1974. This model explains why the student has an active

role in the social media.

According to Blumber and Katz, the users can view as a composite of 4 aspects.

1. Diversion

2. Personal Relationship

3. Personality Identity

4. Surveillance

Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratifications theory suggests that social media users

contribute and have an active role in the social media.

 Diversion

The needs to relax and escape.

 Personal Relationships

Using the social media to fulfil their personal relationships with friends and

becoming part of a social group.

 Personal Identity

The study is anchored on the aforementioned theoretical frameworks which will

serve as link to the conceptual framework. Facebook plays vital role in our society. It

captures the attention of the students to over use it. We used the Uses and Gratification

Theory of Blumler and katz to guide us to our research paper.

 Reacretion – Students used Facebook to escape the real world and focuses to

the social media world to gain entertainment and enjoyment.
