Preparing Today’s Learners To Be Tomorrow’s Innovators August 1, 2018

Programs, Activities, and Conferences Celebrate STEM All Summer!

Here are some picture postcards of our summer so far.

The Girls Coding Project, now in its third year, welcomed many new
participants this year for its introductory track, with many returning
students doing higher-level work in our new advanced track. These girls
had a field trip to M&T Bank where they saw computer science in action,
too. Thanks to our sponsors GM Tonawanda Engine, Marks Family
Foundation, First Niagara Foundation in partnership with Key Bank, and
our partners from the Girl Scouts of WNY and SUNY Buffalo State. We
also welcomed 10 women tech professionals who led a WNY STEM Café
conversation with the girls, too. These informal dialogues inform and
inspire!

WNY STEM Hub’s Southern Tier Satellite at St. Bonaventure University held a panel discussion on
STEAM Integration in Elementary School Classroom on June 7. See the video
here: https://vimeo.com/276497702. The popular Summer Research Program for High School Students
also took place in July: https://vimeo.com/282217827

Our inaugural cohort of Code.org teachers

attended TeacherCon 2018, an intense five-day
training in Phoenix to prepare for teaching Code.org’s
curricula Computer Science Discoveries (middle
school) and Computer Science Principles (high
school). Their learning will continue with a series of
local workshops, led by regional facilitators also
trained by Code.org. WNY STEM Hub, one of two
regional partners in NYS, will recruit a new cohort of
middle and high school teachers later this year who
will attend TeacherCon 2019 in the WNY area next
summer.

Thank you for all you do to support our Hub and STEM/ STEAM in our region.

AT&T Coding Your Future is WNY STEM Hub’s new summer

program for female teens who are new to the US. These girls
immigrated from countries that may not offer technology
education to them: this program, in collaboration of Journey’s
End Refugee Services, SUNY Buffalo, and the Buffalo Urban
League is teaching them basic computer studies with exposure
to computer coding and career preparation. The capstone
project is a website where girls can share their unique stories.
We’re grateful for AT&T’s continued support and partnership in
helping WNY STEM Hub change lives for the next generation
workforce. Learn more here:
