Overview
I have chosen to include my math assessment that I gave my students at the end of my
adding double digit numbers lesson (Artifact 2). I was really impressed with my student’s
abilities with this lesson and I felt it was important to complete a formative assessment before
moving on to the next lesson. I used the assessment that the students completed in the lesson but
changed the number to 18. My goal was to have students work independently and show their
I had each student come up with different ways to show the number 18. I encouraged
students to use base ten blocks, a 1hundred chart and a meter stick/number line. The standards in
this artifact will closely mirror the standards in my second artifact, with a couple changes in CEC
This assessment shows that I have mastered the grade 2 math curriculum and have the
ability to teach such an important lesson in number sense, as well as assess students. Please read
Connection to Standards
INTASC Standards
The standards that I have included for this lesson is Standard #1- Learner Development,
which states, “The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns
of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social,
emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and
challenging learning experiences”, including (b), which states, “The teacher creates
developmentally appropriate instruction that takes into account individual learners’ strengths,
interests, and needs and that enables each learner to advance and accelerate his/ her learning”, as
well as, (d) The teacher understands how learning occurs--how learners construct knowledge,
acquire skills, and develop disciplined thinking processes--and knows how to use instructional
strategies that promote student learning” (INSTAC). These standards show that, I understand
how a child develops, in all areas, and I plan a lesson to take all of their development levels into
consideration. I had all the students complete a final assessment on adding double digit
numbers. In the lesson, students completed the same kind of assessment but this was completed
in a group setting. With my experience in the classroom, I know that there are students who
don’t speak up when they do not understand something and working in a group allows them to
hide their concerns. I had students complete this assessment as a means to determine which
students were struggling. I was able to do so and I completed a re-engagement lesson to help
The next standards that I would like to include are Standard #2-Learning Differences (a)
The teacher designs, adapts, and delivers instruction to address each student’s diverse learning
strengths and needs and creates opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in
different ways” (INSTAC). While planning this lesson, I knew that there were students who
would be off task. I placed these students at the front of the classroom, while instructing the
lesson. I called upon these students to come up to the SMARTBOARD, to use the virtual
The next set of standards that I would like to include is Standard #4-Content Knowledge-
4(d) -The teacher stimulates learner reflection on prior content knowledge, links new concepts to
familiar concepts, and makes connections to learners’ experiences. To do this, I planned to use
the virtual manipulative app called Glen Coe virtual manipulatives. Students had prior
knowledge of this app and were able to use it well during the lesson.
For the purpose of this artifact, I have chosen to attach principle 3, which states,
“Educators create, support, and maintain challenging learning environments for all. Educators
apply their professional knowledge to promote student learning. They know the curriculum and
utilize a range of strategies and assessments to address differences. Educators develop and
implement programs based upon a strong understanding of human development and learning
theory. They support a challenging learning environment. They advocate for necessary resources
to teach to higher levels of learning. They establish and maintain clear standards of behavior and
civility. Educators are role models, displaying the habits of mind and work necessary to develop
and apply knowledge while simultaneously displaying a curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
They invite students to become active, inquisitive, and discerning individuals who reflect upon
and monitor their own learning” (highered). I have chosen this principle as it shows that by
students to become active learners by encouraging them to use manipulatives and explain their
answer.
Care, Respect, Trust and Integrity. For the purpose of this artifact, I have chosen to attach Care,
as it states, “The ethical standard of Care includes compassion, acceptance, interest and insight
for developing students' potential. Members express their commitment to students' well-being
and learning through positive influence, professional judgment and empathy in practice” (oct). I
have chosen this standard as I care about the students developing the necessary skills to add
double digit numbers. By having students complete this assessment independently, I will target
their misconceptions and work with them, as I did in my re-engagement plan. I did not feel
comfortable moving ahead to the next lesson until students conquered this skill.
For the purpose of this artifact, I have chosen to attach the standard 2.NBT.B.5
5. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of
Students in grade 2 are expected to add and subtract within 100 using different strategies. For
the purpose of this lesson, I have introduced students to virtual manipulatives, as well as, base
purpose of this artifact, I have chosen to attach Standard 2: Information Systems –“Students will
access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies” and Standard
“ Students will understand the concepts of and become proficient with the skills of mathematics;
communicate and reason mathematically; become problem solvers by using appropriate tools
and strategies; through the integrated study of number sense and operations, algebra, geometry,
measurement, and statistics and probability” (nysed). The reason I have attached standard
number 2 is for the use of technology within my lesson. I have incorporated the use of Glen Coe
expecting students to understand the learning objectives that I have set forth and eventually
The Ontario Curriculum is broken down into different standards for grade and subject.
For the purpose of this artifact, I have chosen to attach 1.3 Quality relationships-Compose and
I have chosen this strand from the grade 2 mathematics curriculum as “The study of mathematics
equips students with knowledge, skills, and habits of mind that are essential for successful and
rewarding participation in such a society” (edu.gov). Math is everywhere and students must
have the basis understanding of how to use math in our society. Each year, students have new
expectations, and if they have not conquered the expectations from the previous year, they will
The CAEP standards are broken down into 5 standards and for the purpose of this
artifact, I would like to include standard 1, which states, “Content and Pedagogical Knowledge-
The provider ensures that candidates develop a deep understanding of the critical concepts and
principles of their discipline and, by completion, are able to use discipline-specific practices
flexibly to advance the learning of all students toward attainment of college- and career-
readiness standards”, section 1.3 under provider responsibilities, which states, “ Providers ensure
that candidates apply content and pedagogical knowledge as reflected in outcome assessments in
response to standards of Specialized Professional Associations (SPA), the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), states, or other accrediting bodies (e.g., National
proves importance that candidates apply content and pedagogical knowledge. I have done so by
instructing this lesson and creating an assessment to test for student understanding.
ISTE Standards
The ISTE standards are broken down into 7 categories and for this artifact I would like to
attach standard #1, which states, “Educators continually improve their practice by learning from
and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to
improve student learning” (iste). This standard is very important as it asks educators to
constantly improve their learning and explore different means of delivering a lesson.
ILA Standards
The ILA standards are broken down into 7 standards, and for the purpose of this artifact, I
would like to attach Standard #3-Assessment and Evaluation. This standard states, “Candidates
understand, select, and use valid, reliable, fair, and appropriate assessment tools to screen,
diagnose, and measure student literacy achievement; inform instruction and evaluate
advocate for appropriate literacy practices to relevant stakeholders” (ila). The artifact that I have
chosen is an assessment that I used to determine my students abilities in the area of adding
double digit numbers within 100. I used this assessment and intervened where necessary. I had
a few students who did not understand more than one way to find two numbers that added to 18,
and as a result, I was able to show them one than one way using manipulatives.
CEC Standards
The CEC Standards are broken down into 5 principles and for the purpose of this
artifact, I would like to include Standard #12, which states, “Participating in the growth
challenging myself with new skills for the classroom, and I will implement these skills
educator must always be one step ahead of them. I will do this through my own
