Commander’s Report
Well another Relic Show is in the books! I am writing
this before the Show so I hope it goes well. I will give a report at
the July meeting.
This month’s speaker is Jim Tyrney. He is a member and
his topic will be ‘The Sinking of the Cairo on the Yazoo River’.
He will be showcasing a replica of the mine used to sink the
Cairo! One of only three in existence! We will have the winner of
the Turkey Shoot from the Trail of Honor and much more!
So come early, bring someone with you and as sure as
time and tide wait for no man, I’ll probably see you at the Bass
Pro Shop on July 7th, 2018. The OCR meeting starts at 5:00pm.
The buffet starts at 6:00 and runs until 6:30. As always, the SCV
meeting starts at 7:00pm sharp. – Tim Cupit

 CHAPLAIN’S REPORT

When It’s Hot – It’s Hot!
I heard a story a while back about how my neighbor who had lost his metal
pulpwood chain. He said that he looked far and short for it and was just
about to give up when he decided to take a break under the shade of a large
oak tree to get out of the hot sun. As he recalled as he sat down under the
cool of the tree, he happened to glance over and there it was right beside
him. He later stated that that chain had most likely gotten so hot in the
summer sun that it had the same idea as his to keep cool.
While the temperatures are often hot outside and uncomfortable to most, I
found it very refreshing to remind myself that in many ways the heat of the
day may not give much comfort. But it is always
surpassed by the people around us who contribute and share common ideas
and causes.
The month of June usually signals the beginning of summer. Kids are out of
school. Families go on vacations. Conventions are planned and many other
activities happen. In the same way the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the
Order of the Confederate Rose conducted their annual reunion at the home of
Jefferson Davis in Biloxi during the early part of June of this year 2018. The
reunion was attended by many and was conducted in a way that exemplified
the character of who we are in lifting up the Name of our Lord Jesus and the
heritage of our Southern Cause. Not to be outdone the 2018 Civil War Relic
Show held in the City of Brandon was also attended by many. All of the
people I spoke to were very positive and stated that they were making plans
to return to the show next year. I also received many thanks for all of you,
camp 265, who made the show possible. I look forward to our camp
meetings and Fall Muster. God’s Blessing.

front lines where the battle rages and yet there is comfort joined with
others.”
May God Bless each of you and keep you for, He Who goes before us, the
battle has been won.

ADJUTANT’S REPORT

Fifty nine people signed in for door prizes at the June meeting.
We had the pleasure of having Mr. Grady Howell as our guest speaker. As
always, he delivered a talk full of history. Anytime Mr. Grady speaks you
will be educated and entertained!
Replacement certificates, denoting their membership in the Rankin Rough
and Ready's, Camp # 265, were given to Jim Tyrney and Richard R. Lee.
Richard C. Lee requested reinstatement into the S.C.V. and was voted into
our camp. Jonas Hogan Patrick was voted into Camp 265 as a new member.
Jonas is also a member of the Magnolia Rifles reenactors. Mr. Lonnie
Pridgen celebrated his 83rd birthday at the meeting– he shared a birthday
cake with the camp. Lynn Gaskin received the Camp Commander's Award
for work "above and beyond " from Commander Cupit. The " pass the hat"
took in $78.00. This money is used to help offset camp expenses.
I want to thank everyone who attended the MS Division Reunion on June
8th-10th at Beauvoir; those who served as delegates and all others who
attended. New bylaws were discussed and voted on during the business
meeting. Some were passed, while others were sent back for more work. We
were fortunate to bring home four awards:
- W. X. Broome Young Compatriot Award -Brayden Gray.
- Col. W. H. Moore Recruiting Award - Charles Gray
- Rep. J. L. Harris Heritage Award - Jeremy Quarshie ( member of the
Magnolia Rifles)
- Varina Howell Davis - Mary Ann Forrest O.C.R., Chapter 23.
James Williams won a Nathan Bedford Forrest hat pin at the banquet.
Congratulations to Bill Hinson, 4th brigade commander, and commander of
the Lowry Rifles on receiving the General S. D. Lee Lifetime Achievement
Award. Trent Lewis, 3rd brigade commander, and commander of the Crystal
Spring's Southern Rights received the General W. M. Barksdale Brigade
Commander of the Year Award–Congratulations Trent! Mr. Bill Kuriger
received the first Charles Smith Award from the state O.C.R., for his support
to our O.C.R. chapter.
Another Relic Show is in the books. Attendance on Saturday was great, but
it slowed down on Sunday. Feedback was positive and everyone (vendors,
guest, and camp members) are looking forward to next year when we will
be hosting the 2019 MS Division Reunion and Relic Show on June 7th, 8th,
and 9th. The silent auction, which ended at the relic show, raised $490.13
for the scholarship fund.
A check for $300.00, as voted by the camp, has been issued to the Magnolia
Rifles for their trip to Gettysburg.
The O.C.R.will be doing breakfast with the Florence Police Department on
July 13 at 6:30 A.M. It is a small group of officers, but they seem to be
looking forward to our visit.
Dan McCaskill, MS division adjutant, reported on 6/19, 2018 that we have
1,700 members in the MS Division. Dan stated this is a testament to the
hard work of our members in recruiting and getting past members to rejoin.
YES, MEMBERSHIP DUES are DUE! Please get them to me as soon as
possible. They are due 7/31/18. I must have them no later than 7/27/18, so I
can process them and send them to National HQ and Division before July
31, 2018. Make checks payable to S.C.V. #265 for $50.00.

June was a whirlwind month with the Division Reunion in
Biloxi the second weekend, and the Brandon Interactive Civil
War Relic Show the third weekend. I’m so pleased with the
turn out at both events and have much appreciation for each
one of you!

Greenhow Award for the most new members with more than
25 members, the Bella Boyd Award for helping our
sponsoring Camp 265 with projects and activities, which Mrs.
Robbie Lewis helped us to achieve, the Kate Cummings
Award for most volunteer work for the year as a chapter with
more than 25 members, also achieved by Mrs. Robbie’s hard
work and dedication to the cause, the Lottie and Ginny Moon
Award for our Chapter newsletter, edited by Charla Lewis, the
newsletter is quite a bit of work getting ladies to send items in
so we are thankful to Charla for not only editing our chapter
newsletter but the State Newsletter as well, and Chapter of the
Year for leadership, responsibility, and for fulfilling all the
duties bestowed on us. Last but not least our Chapter received
the Varina Howell Davis Award from the Mississippi Division
Sons of Confederate Veterans for our outstanding work in
supporting the Mississippi Division in all of their endeavors.
You all earned these awards with your work and dedication as
one person can’t achieve this on their own, and I applaud you
all for your hard work.

Now to the Civil War Relic Show! What a great turnout we had
from the Chapter! All I can say is I’m so pleased with you all
wanting to dress out and help with the show. Everyone played
a part whether it was setup, volunteering to help with door
prizes, taking water to the vendors and checking on them,
helping them load and unload their treasures, running the
OCR booth, and the work you all did to help on Sunday to
clean up! You all deserve a hand for your hard work.

Our next state meeting will be hosted in September by the

William P. Rogers OCR in Corinth, with date to be announced
as soon as we can get one set that works for everyone. Our July
meeting will be conducted by Mrs. Robbie Lewis, so please
attend as I know she will have something special planned.
Charla and I will be in Gettysburg that weekend but I know
you will all support the chapter meeting as usual. Have a
fantastic July!
