1) Introduction: Need for IC engines in near future, Basic terminology and architecture. IC engine
history, 2-stroke and 4-stroke Engine cycles, SI and CI engine concept, air standard cycles and
their comparison (4 lectures)
2) Various types of IC engines in use at present, their specifications and applications. Engine
Design and Operating parameters, correlation between parameters, kinematics (4 lectures)
3) Thermochemistry of Fuel Air mixture, stoichiometry, dissociation, equilibrium, heating value,
enthalpy of formation, adiabatic temperature, first law analysis, combustion efficiency,
properties of working fluids (3 lectures)
4) Fuel-air cycles: SI engine and CI engine cycle simulation using assumed heat release; efficiency
and performance comparison with actual cycles, deviation from ideal cycle behaviour,
performance testing methods (5 lectures)
5) Engine gas exchange process, Charge motion within cylinder, fuel metering in SI engines,
mixture requirements, manifold flow phenomena (5 lectures)
6) Combustion in SI engines: Flame structure and propagation, factors affecting burning rate,
abnormal combustion and knock, combustion chamber design (4 lectures)
7) Combustion in CI engines: Features of diesel combustion process, fuel spray behaviour,
ignition delay, mixing controlled combustion, knock in diesel engines (5 lectures)
8) Pollutant formation and control: Importance and environmental impact, formation of
nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and particulate matter (3 lectures)
9) Heat transfer in engine, Engine energy balance, Vehicle requirements, Engine lubrication and
friction (4 lectures)
10) Engine operating characteristics, performance and design: Factors affecting performance,
efficiency and emissions, design parameters such as spark timing, valve opening, mixture
composition, fuel injection strategies, supercharging, chamber optimization (3 lectures)
11) Future trends: IC Engine development prospects, stratified charge, direct injection systems,
Homogeneous charge compression ignition; Low temperature diesel combustion; electronic-
controls; Hybrids and fuel cells (2 lectures)
