The 1991 Telephone Consumer
Protection Act (TCPA) prohibits busi-
nesses from making auto-dialed or
pre-recorded calls to a person’s cell
phone and similar telemarketing calls to
home phones. However, this law does not
apply to the federal government, nor to
contractors working on the government’s
behalf. The only prohibition for the feds
is political campaign telemarketing
(RCReader.com/y/ntk1).
In January, 2016 SCOTUS ruled
(Campbell-Ewald Co. v. Gomez) that
the government is exempt because of
sovereign immunity, falling outside
the TCPA’s definition of a person: “The
TCPA is codified within the Commu-
nications Act, which defines ‘person’
to ‘include an individual, partnership,
association, joint-stock company, trust,
or corporation.’”
Consequently, on June 8, 2016, the
Federal Communications Commis-
sion (FCC) adopted its own Declaratory
Ruling (FCC 16-72). It is interesting to
note that in Citizens United, SCOTUS
based its controversial ruling on corpo-
rations having “person” status. Because
the United States of America is itself
a corporation, it follows that it, too,
has“person” status and should arguably
not be exempt (RCReader.com/y/ntk2).
Sovereign Immunity, while not speci-
fied in the U.S. Constitution, is a legal
construct underpinned by the curious
principle that governments cannot be
sued by courts whose powers were cre-
ated by government in the first place.
This inference mirrors “English common
law legal maxim rex non potest peccare,”
meaning “The King can do no wrong.”
Basically, the federal government, states,
and various public-sector entities cannot
be sued without first consenting to it,
except for a few very specific statutes that
waive immunity.
There are two categories of Sovereign
Immunity: “Absolute immunity: When
absolute immunity applies a government
actor may not be sued for the allegedly
wrongful act, even if that person acted
maliciously or in bad faith; and Qualified
immunity: When qualified immunity
applies the government actor is shielded
from liability only if specific conditions
are met, as specified in statute or case
law.” If it can be demonstrated that the
government acted in bad faith, then it
can be sued for damages, but the actions
must be unambiguously demonstrable in
harm caused. Government actors, such
as prosecutors, judges, law enforcement
officials, myriad agencies’ bureaucrats,
and elected officials, too often ride a
disturbingly thin line, acting with impu-
nity based on sovereign immunity. The
public should insist congress revisit this
extraordinary privilege to remove carte
blanc immunity and include statutory
prosecution and consequences (both
criminal and civil) for actors where
abuses prevail (RCReader.com/y/ntk3).
Tech Giants Have It
Both Ways
Facebook, Twitter, Google and You-
Tube, et al, have government-sanctioned
exemptions from consumer lawsuits
based on their declared status as “neutral
platforms.” Therefore, activities such
as shadow banning and censorship
arguably violate the conditions of their
exemptions.
Section 230 of the Communications
Decency Act (CDA) was designed to
protect service providers from fallout
due to content they have no part in pro-
ducing, yet provide on their platforms.
As third-party conveyors, Section 230 of
the CDA guarantees free speech online
by shielding Internet service providers
(ISPs), social-media platforms, and other
such providers from lawsuits that could
otherwise arise (RCReader.com/y/ntk4).
While Section 230 is not without relevant
controversy, it errs on the side of the First
Amendment and an open Internet that
would otherwise be arguably compro-
mised by the CDA itself, seen by many as
codified First Amendment infringement
(RCReader.com/y/ntk5).
However, when the same ISPs and
social-media companies purposefully
engage in subjective censorship of
content, they violate the very condition
of immunity that protects them. These
monopolies don’t get to have it both
ways. Either they operate as neutral
platforms, allowing all content without
subjective cherry-picking, and enjoy-
ing immunity form user lawsuits, or
they don’t. If they act as gatekeepers for
preferred content, then they should by
default also lose any protection from
consumer lawsuits. Claiming neutral-
ity while violating certain users’ First
Amendment rights via subjective
censorship, yet continuing to enjoy

immunity from legal challenges permits
these social media and ISP monopolies
to engage in government-sanctioned
censorship and discriminatory business
practices on an epic scale.
This immunity can be particularly
egregious considering these monopo-
listic providers act as public squares, as
well as aggregators of massive amounts
of personal data unimaginable a decade
ago. Most of these services, including
Amazon, collect detailed personal data,
then reorganize and sell it according to
customer specification. Consider that the
U.S. government is the largest and most
lucrative client for each of these tech
giants, each providing data collection
and analysis that is otherwise disallowed
by the U.S. Constitution for the govern-
ment to collect and compile on its own.
But nothing stops the public sector from
being end-users of personal data aggre-
gated, compiled, and very specifically
organized by private-sector companies
who have no such limits. In other words,
Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube,
and Amazon, all of whom have limitless
control over users’ personal information,
do the data collection for governments
who are strictly prohibited by law from
engaging in what the U.S. Constitution
considers invasions of privacy.
Government Gone
Rogue
National Security Letters are admin-
istrative subpoenas, and arguably fall
outside the U.S. Constitution in viola-
tion of the Fourth Amendment. (Court
challenges have argued the constitution-
ality of NSLs as applied to both the First
Amendment and the Fourth Amend-
ment.) NSLs originated with Congress
and the Bush Administration after 9/11
as part of the U.S. Patriot Act. NSLs
require telephone companies, Internet
service providers, banks, credit bureaus,
and other businesses to produce highly
personal records of their customers and
subscribers without a judge’s approval.
Furthermore, any disclosure to custom-
ers/subscribers that their records have
been turned over is forbidden on threat
of felony charges (RCReader.com/y/
ntk6).
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled
that certain data seized by the FBI via
NSLs is not constitutionally protected
because there is no “reasonable expecta-
tion of privacy,” especially if the person

has already provided the data to a third
party, such as his/her telephone company
(i.e. phone calls/numbers are logged for
billing purposes). Therefore, no judge’s
approval is required for FBI to covertly
seize the data. The recipient of an NSL
may challenge the nondisclosure provi-
sion in federal court. However, in some
cases, the data seized is deemed classi-
fied and thus restricted to the person
whose data was seized, including his/her
attorney(s) for defense purposes.
Government’s ability to search/seize
personal private records using NSLs,
strictly as part of a national security
investigation, is that person’s expectation
of privacy. This litmus test is twofold:
(1) Government’s action must violate an
individual’s actual, subjective expecta-
tion of privacy; and (2) expectation of
privacy must be what society would
recognize as reasonable. It is interesting
to note that before WiFi and cell-phone
technology, individuals’ activities using
land-line phones enjoyed the protections
of our Fourth Amendment. Phone num-
bers were also logged for billing purposes
by third-party providers. So what is the
construed difference in the constitu-
tional protections of digital versus analog
services (RCReader.com/y/ntk7)?
In 2007, Department of Justice Inspec-
tor General Glen Fine completed an
audit of the FBI’s use of NSLs and found
serious abuses in process, ranging from
nonexistent investigations, unauthor-
ized signatures (exigent letters), and a
host of other unlawful liberties in issuing
NSLs. The audit found that in 2002, the
FBI (under the supervision of Robert
Mueller, whose authority as director is
expressly required for each NSL) issued
approximately 8,500 NSLs, but by 2004,
issuance had risen to approximately
56,000. Over the three-year period, more
than 152,000 NSLs were issued, with an
estimate of 7,000 being improperly or
illegally let. According to the Electronic
Frontier Foundation who also provided
a comprehensive study, Patterns of
Misconduct: FBI Intelligence Violations
From 2001 – 2008, on abuse of power by
the FBI, the average time lag between a
violation/abuse and its reporting is two-
and-a-half years. While this information
was based on misconduct that occurred
more than 10 years ago, history matters
more than ever, as Americans awaken to
our government’s increasing departure
from the rule of law (RCReader.com/y/
ntk8).

The Short-Term Plan Behind Democratic Fundraising
A
couple of years ago, a little more than
1,400 voters took Democratic primary
ballots in sparsely populated Warren
County, which is about an hour west of Peoria.
Almost twice that many took Republican
ballots.
The Warren County Democratic Central
Committee is not exactly a campaign pow-
erhouse. The organization officially opened
its PAC with $923.72 in June of 2016. By June
30 of this year, the county party reported
having $917.72 in the bank. I couldn’t find any
records showing how that $6 was spent.
But last week, the county organization
received a $5,000 check from the Rock Island
County Democratic Party. Warren is one of
14 counties that received a total of more than
$200,000 from the Rock Island Dems last
week.
Warren’s check tied with Effingham
County’s for being the smallest. The Kankakee
County Democrats received about $28,000.
Kane County’s Dems received about $20K.
Williamson County got about $14K. The
Metro East’s Madison County Democrats
have so far received the largest check in this
initial round: $45,495. The Carroll County
Democrats have raised an average of about
$3,000 a year for the past 18 years, but they
received $7,523.50 last week.
As I’ve told you before, the Rock Island
Democratic Party Chairman is Doug House,
who also runs the Illinois Democratic County
Chairs’ Association. Because state campaign
finance laws allow unlimited contributions
between county-level party organizations,
the JB Pritzker campaign gave House’s Rock
Island Democrats $1 million earlier this year
as the first installment on its “Blue Wave
Illinois 2018” program.
The idea is to finally try to build the party
up at the local level after years of neglect by
the top. The Democratic Party of Illinois,
run by House Speaker Michael Madigan, has
reported raising more than $80 million since
1999, but it has spent precious few dollars to
help local parties. Basically, the only time
DPI has bothered to work with local party
organizations in the past is when they could
be helpful with the handful of competitive
state legislative races scattered here and
there – particularly Speaker Madigan’s House
races. And even then, the object wasn’t really
to make local parties viable, but to extract
whatever human and other resources they had
in order to assist Madigan’s campaigns.
Chairman House has, along with the Pritz-
ker campaign, established a grant program.
County-party organizations can qualify for
money by, for instance, opening an office.
The local committees are also being strongly
encouraged to hire a part-time or full-time
administrator, depending on their size.
Some counties will reportedly receive
money to send direct mail and run ads on
local radio stations and on cable TV. They’re
supposed to establish a social-media presence
and recruit specific numbers of volunteers for
phone-banking and door-to-door canvasses,
among other things. They’re also supposed to
put together a get-out-the-vote program for
the final month. This is all new stuff for many
local parties.
Several county parties, particularly Down-
state, have few actual precinct committee-per-
sons. In Chicago and suburban Cook, precinct
captains are appointed by local township and
ward committeemen. They don’t have to live
in the precincts assigned to them. Every-
where else, committee-persons are elected in
their precincts – and it’s not easy convincing
people to run for that office, particularly in
overwhelmingly Republican areas. However,
those county chairs can fill vacancies, and the
appointed committee-persons don’t have to
live in the precincts they represent, so a big
push is on to get counties to a minimum level
of 75-percent coverage.

building money is coming.
By contrast, as of last week, Governor Bruce
Rauner’s campaign had given a total of about
$33,000 divided between nine county and
township Republican organizations since
the March primary. The Illinois Republican
Party chipped in another $25,000 during the
same time period for a handful of county
organizations.
JB Pritzker’s campaign has contributed
$5.7 million to various Democratic groups
and candidates since the primary, including
big bucks to several suburban and Chicago
political organizations. Pritzker’s campaign
gave the St. Clair County Democrats $200,000
during the primary and it paid off big. Pritz-
ker won St. Clair with 76 percent of the vote.
It’s not like the Democrats are expecting
to win all that many Downstate counties this
year. In the short-term anyway, I think the
plan is simply to try to lose those counties by
fewer votes than they have in the past, which
will still help the overall effort.

W ith the band having opened for the likes of
Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, the Zac Brown
Band, and the Goo Goo Dolls, Davenport’s Red-
stone Room hosts an August 8 concert with the
Celtic-rock talents of Gaelic Storm, an assemblage
of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists lauded by
the Examiner for their “high energy, consistent
interaction with the audience, and exceptional
musical performance.”
Based in California, Gaelic Storm had its
beginnings in 1996, when co-founders Patrick
Murphy and Steve Wehmeyer joined with Steve

Twigger and Uillean piper Brian Walsh to perform @ the Redstone Room – August 8
at O’Brien’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Santa Monica, where Murphy was the manager. This led to a
number of area pub performances over the next years, and in 1997, Gaelic Storm appeared in Titanic
as the doomed ship’s steerage band, performing such numbers as the “Blarney Pilgrim” jig and “John
Ryan’s Polka.” With those songs included on the second Titanic soundtrack album and James Cameron’s

Performing an energetic mix of traditional Irish and Scottish fare, rock hits and ballads, drinking songs,

will, from August 3 through 12, stage a collaboration
between an Emmy-nominated writer/producer and a
Broadway-veteran director: the pitfalls-of-show-busi-
ness comedy Beginner’s Luck, written by noted sitcom
scribe P.J. Lasker (The Golden Girls, Barney Miller) and
directed by the Great White Way’s Philip Wm. McKinley
(Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, The Boy from Oz).
Set in present-day Hollywood, Beginner’s Luck finds a
former child star down on his luck in his 20s and trying, Megan Clarke, Tristan Odenkirk, Keenan Oden-
and failing, to deal with his loss of fame. Dropped by his kirk, and Marjorie Gast in the Mississippi Bend
agent, disliked by his ex-wife, and bemoaning his lack Players’ Beginner’s Luck – August 3 through 12
of confidence, the young has-been attempts to cope
through questionable plans for a comeback and fast-
paced conversations … which the actor, Harold, has with his alternate self, Harry.
Enjoying its first-ever theatrical staging, Beginner’s Luck is an original work by Lasker, a “Best Comedy Series”
nominee for co-producing the TV classic The Golden Girls whose other Hollywood credits include scripts for Barney
Miller, Mama’s Family, and the feature film The Man from Elysian Fields. McKinley, who serves as the Mississippi Bend
Players’ Executive Artistic Director and helmed the 2017 company debut Zombie Prom, directed Hugh Jackman to a
Tony Award in The Boy from Oz and boasts Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and The Most Happy Fella among additional
New York credits.
Portraying the yin/yang team of Harold and Harry are real-life brothers Keenan and Tristan Odenkirk, both of
whom appeared in the Mississippi Bend Players’ season-opening production of Big River. Keenan, who recently
graduated from Augustana, also co-starred in the MBP’s The Glass Menagerie and Zombie Prom, while Tristan,
entering his junior year at Augustana, portrayed Eugene Jerome in last summer’s Neil Simon comedy Brighton Beach
Memoirs. Also featured in Beginner’s Luck are area actors Lora Adams (the Black Box Theatre’s Murderers), Megan
Clarke (the MBP’s Brighton Beach Memoirs), Mark Ruebling (Quad City Music Guild’s Curtains), Reader employee Mike
Schulz (the MBP’s Wait Until Dark), and an ensemble composed of Madeline Fer, Melina Herman, Noel Huntley, Ellie
Larson, Kira Rangel, and Jaryd Whitmore.

inspiration and techniques from various sources,
Laurel Farrin: No Particular Order @ Figge
Farrin explores how viewers relate to abstract Art Museum – through September 9
forms. Farrin’s paintings confound the viewer with visual riddles, contradictions, and comic juxtapositions,
all the while convincing the viewer to feel sympathy for abstract shapes.
In Farrin’s work, geometric forms take on a humanlike presence while performing Sisyphean tasks.
Some of these struggles are documented in videos that show the assemblages being thrust into motion by
the wind. The same breeze that allowed these figures to move inevitably thwarts their struggle by blowing
them over, leading to an endless cycle of fruitless gestures. Similar abstract figures inhabit seemingly
empty frames in Farrin’s paintings. When these frames are combined they seem to form a comic strip that
the viewer must piece together. Viewers are led to believe that if the frames are assembled correctly, the
punchline to the joke will be revealed – if one even exists.
Laurel Farrin is an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of Art and Art History at
the University of Iowa. She received a BFA from Ohio University-Athens and an MFA from the University
of Maryland, and has oftentimes served as an artist-in-residence: at the Roswell Museum and Art Center
in Roswell, New Mexico; at New York’s Millay Colony for the Arts; and at the Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts. Farrin also received an individual artist grant from the Washington, D.C. Commission on the Arts &
Humanities.

Art Makes Us Happy
I
do understand why museums intimidate
us: We feel as if we won’t “get” what is
meant to be gotten. But well-curated
museums provide a broader experience
than we often allow ourselves to have.
What if we allowed our own interpretation
to be the main goal? When there’s nothing
to “get” other than our own perspective,
a museum visit can uncover a simple con-
tentment, peace of mind, and happiness.
On a recent, typical July afternoon that
reached upwards of 100 degrees, I had the
pleasure of pacing myself through the cool
(both temperature- and aesthetics-wise)

port. The building itself is a work of art
worth seeing. While the Figge’s sheer exte-
rior is disciplined and daunting to some,
the layout and galleries are kind, open, and
invite wonder. First-time visitors will be
wowed by the clean, crisp infrastructure
and grand galleries, lobbies, and landings.
From the entrance to the top floor, the staff
was eager to assist, and after a quick map
pick-up, I was ready to explore.

Walking into the third-floor gallery,
a certain mellowness takes over. Alois
Kronschlaeger’s Figge-specific sculpture
exhibition titled Polychromatic Contempla-
tions (on view through September 16) was
tranquil and settling. Each one of the free-
standing assemblages was dramatically
and subtly lit from above. Early stages of
skyscrapers come to mind, and one can
walk freely amidst the dense grid of floor-
mounted pieces – some only knee-high,
others 12-plus feet in the air. Kronsch-
laeger (born in Austria in 1966, currently
residing in Brooklyn, New York) erects
geometric see-through labyrinths of thin
wood strips, some adorned with string art
and woven fabric, and others invaded by
cloud-shaped metal mesh. There are sev-
eral nods to the Figge building’s exterior,
invoking architect David Chipperfield,
and some of the pieces were mounted atop

floor, and your first view in the exhibit is
Mr. Peanut’s hollow posterior body cavity,
revealing Banks’ nutty craftsmanship.
Banks, who lives and has a studio
mere blocks from the Figge, extends an
invitation to take a closer look at our
homegrown relationship with media and
pop-culture. We all recognize Mr Peanut,
but why? The answer is a whimsical jungle
gym that explores how and why mass-
consumption messaging vies to shape
our identities. A proper primer is in the
posted exhibit introduction by Marshall
McLuhan: “The medium is the message,
the medium is the mess age, the Medium is
the Massage.”
The exhibition holds close to 30 pieces,
including four sculptures, utilizing a wide
variety of mediums: hot glue, fabric, card-
board, cement, liquid nails, plastic toys,
carved wood, hand-built ceramics includ-
ing tiny bricks, metal, canvas, old bill-
board material … and cigarette butts. The
result is provocative, enticing, and playful
imagery. While his work boasts heavily
on recycled materials, his concepts shout
originality. Banks is a draftsman, painter,
and textile artist, literally and figuratively
providing powerful starting points for sift-
ing through a meaningful process.
The complexity of textures, deft political
parody, and layers of recognizable carica-
tures brought forth by consumerism all
kick-start a right-brain-versus-left-brain
battle – an army of creativity, feelings, and
imagination confronting logic, strategy,
and analytic reasoning. The exhibit is
grandiose in size, content, and color, and
many of the paintings are encompassed
with elaborate wooden frames made up
of words, landscapes, and characters,
all meticulously carved with legions of
Dremel tools. Just within the frame itself,

you can get lost in the intricately designed
adventure maps.
Palimpsest is reference to an ancient
method of reusing parchment that left
prior layers salvagable. This layering, or
revealing of iterations, is most refreshingly
understood in the title cards, where the
prior titles of the piece are hand-written in
and crossed out. Art is a living and breath-
ing entity, and it grows and changes just
like everything else. When that matura-
tion process is recognized effectively, as
in the title cards, the work generates even
more connections.
The exhibit’s centerpiece, titled Proces-
sionalization: Power Lunch with the Tasa-
day, is a 20-foot-wide mural resembling
both rusty metal and clay, and outlining
a relief storyboard inside five panels.
Blanketing the wood floor directly below
the mural from end to end is an avalanche
of hand-built ceramic detritus. From
Dagwood-style sandwiches to classical
ionic pillars, and from tribal masks to
suction-pod groupings, this pile of pottery
shards is also Banks’ ceramic boneyard for
the elements.

The Melvins

ed by rock legend Buzz Osborne, who has been
touring with his band for 35 years, the sludge-
metal and hardcore-punk musicians of The Melvins
make a return appearance at the Rock Island Brew-
ing Company on August 6, with AllMusic.com writ-
ing of the iconic group, “Their ability to combine
punk with a strong Black Sabbath influence had a
major impact on everything from grunge to alterna-
tive metal to doom metal and stoner rock.”
Ranked number two on Metal Injection’s list of
“10 Heaviest Grunge Bands,” The Melvins were
formed in early 1983 by guitarist Osborne, bassist The Melvins @ RIBCO – August 6
Matt Lukin, and drummer Mike Dillard, all of whom
attended Montesano Jr. and Sr. High School in Montesano, Washington. Though they initially played covers
by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cream, original music was recorded for the Melvins’ 1986 EP debut Six Songs,
and in December of that year, the group recorded its first full-length album Gluey Porch Treatments for
California’s Alchemy Records. By the early 1990s, the Melvins had begun to tour internationally in between
recording albums such as 1991’s Bullhead and 1992’s Lysol. And when Nirvana’s Nevermind became an
unexpectedly massive success, the Melvins were one of many groups to benefit from Nirvana’s support,
having been an early inspiration for a young Kurt Cobain. They were consequently signed by Altnatic
Records, and their first major label release, 1993’s Houdini, entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at
number 29.
To date, the Melvins’ extraordinary musical legacy and longevity have resulted in 21 studio albums, seven
live albums, eight compilation albums, and six EPs, with the band’s most recent recording – Pinkus Abortion
Technician, released on April 20 – inspiring MetalNexus.net to rave that “everything they put out is binge-
worthy material,” with the artists themselves described as “the godfathers of sludge as well as grunge.”
Last year’s A Walk with Love & Death, meanwhile, was cited in a River Cities’ Reader article by Max Allison as
an album that “exemplifies the elements that keep fans coming back for more: the capacity to lose oneself
in the thrill of their riffs and to headbang in the pit, juxtaposed against the need to take a step back, scratch
your head, and follow along with their strange, nearly illogical decisions to confound and experiment.”
The Melvins perform on August 6 with an opening set by Jon Spencer, tickets to the all-ages 8 p.m. show

aintings, sculptures, and works by a prominent
Quad Cities gallery owner are on display through
August 29 at the Quad City International Airport, as
Quad City Arts presents a trio of new exhibitions by
Des Moines painter Robert Reeves, sculptor Matt
Moyer from Columbia, Missouri, and Bettendorf’s Pat
Beréskin, owner and operator of the city’s Beréskin Gal-
lery & Art Academy.
A prolific painter as well as a dedicated teacher
and world traveler, Beréskin’s latest series City Lights
delivers a unique view of the architecture of the
Quad Cities and popular destinations worldwide, Pat Beréskin’s Cape Town @ Quad City
including New York, Chicago, and Paris. Her paintings International Airport Art Gallery – through August 29
depict city lights and the way light plays on the
architectural structures, and viewers are sure to sense the vibrations, sounds, and grittiness of the city when they
ponder Beréskin’s paintings. In 2013, the artist opened her first gallery in Davenport, and recently moved to an
8,000-square-foot building in downtown Bettendorf that hosts a gallery, an art academy, and a studio space in
which guests can not only view regional artworks, but watch artists at work creating new ones.
Reeves depicts scenes of urban life, with his oil paintings portraying specific moments in time during the daily
life of average city-dwelling Americans. Drawing from his surroundings and using architectural and figurative
themes as backdrops, he employs his understanding of color and perspective to render everyday locations
and objects from his unique point of view, seeking to draw the viewer into a specific setting and illicit a personal
re-examination of the familiar. Reeves received a BA in Art with honors from the University of Northern Iowa in
1994, and has been creating and exhibiting for more than 20 years – public art, studio work, and commissions for
private collectors and corporate collections.
A Moline native, Missouri’s Moyer presents abstract, welded steel sculptures that represent self-contained
mechanical systems, and using new steel, he works on the surfaces with paints and grinders to achieve the
appearance of something old and worn. His public sculptures have been showcased in the Quad Cities for years
as part of Quad City Arts’ sculpture program, but his latest works will fit inside the glass cases in the airport gallery
and interact with the cityscapes of Bereskin and Reeves. A University of Missouri-Columbia MFA candidate, Moyer
holds a BFA from the University of Iowa, and his pieces can also be found in the permanent collection of Galesburg
Public Waterworks.
The Quad City International Airport Gallery is located opposite the airport’s gift shop and restaurant, there

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE –
FALLOUT
Lord knows we don’t need any more
awards for movies and the people who
make them. But after watching the latest
sequel to Mission: Impossible – hell, after
watching its first 10 minutes – I was
actively wishing that someone would at
least fashion an oversize blue ribbon, or
maybe an Edible Arrangements bouquet
of some sort, in recognition of “Best Pre-
Opening-Credits Sequence.” Because
the one that writer/director Christopher
McQuarrie and company have devised
for Mission: Impossible – Fallout is prac-
tically a movie of its own, and an awfully
good one.
At the start of McQuarrie’s prelude,
we’re given the return of Tom Cruise’s
Ethan Hunt, of course, as well as the
traditional “should you choose to accept
it” invitation from his Impossible Mis-
sions Force superior (Alec Baldwin), this Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Tom Cruise, and Ving Rhames in Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Seize the Meh
I’m a 31-year-old guy who got really hurt
after a relationship ended a few years back.
Now I just don’t date women whom I’ll ever
really care about because I don’t ever want to
feel how I felt when my previous relationship
ended. My friends say I’m being a coward
and missing out. But hey – I’m not depressed
over any chicks. I think I’m being smart
in protecting myself. Maybe more people
should take this approach.

These days, your relationships probably
start when you eyeball a woman on the street:
“Whoa! I bet she’d be seriously mediocre in
bed!”
Next, you discover that she’s a real yawn out
of the sack, too – and you’re in!
Now it’s possible that you’re way more
emotionally sensitive than most people, to the
point where a loss that others would eventu-
ally recover from hits you like a never-ending
colonoscopy. (With, um, artisanal anesthesia:
“If you’ll just bite this stick … .”)
Even if you are super-sensitive, avoiding the
pain comes at a substantial price: living a gray
goulash of a life, spending every day with some
uninspiring somebody you don’t really care
about. But consider that we evolved to be resil-
ient – to heal from emotional injuries as we
do physical ones. However, in order for you to
do this – and to see that you might actually be
able to stand the pain of loss – you need to view
resilience not as some mysterious emotional
gift but as a practice.
Resilience comes out of what clinical psy-
chologist Salvatore Maddi calls “hardiness.”
He writes that “hardiness ... provides the cour-
age and motivation to do the hard, strategic
work of turning stressful circumstances from
potential disasters into growth opportuni-
ties.” His research finds that hardiness is made
up of three “interrelated attitudes,” which he
calls the three Cs: Commitment, Control, and
Challenge.
Commitment is the desire to engage with
people and life instead of pulling away and
isolating yourself. Control is the motivation to
take action to improve your life “rather than
sinking into passivity and powerlessness.”
Challenge is the willingness to face the stress
life throws at you and use it as a learning expe-
rience “rather than playing it safe by avoiding
uncertainties and potential threats.”
These attitudes might not come naturally
to you. But you can choose to take them up,
same as you might other “unnatural practices,”
like monogamy and wearing deodorant.

Understanding that there are steps you can
take to recover from heartbreak might give you
the courage to go for a woman you really love.
Sure, that woman might leave you – caus-
ing you big-time pain. But consider that risk
avoidance – such as by being with a woman
you don’t really care about – isn’t pain avoid-
ance. The pain is just different. It’s low-dose
extended-release – such as frequently expe-
riencing the post-sex horror that leads you
to want to grab your clothes and make a run
for it before the woman next to you wakes up.
And then you remember a couple of essential
points: She’s your wife, not some Tinder rando,
and it’s your apartment.
Give Pizza a Chance
I’m a straight 36-year-old woman, and
I recently lost a lot of weight. My doctor’s
happy. My girlfriends think I look great.
They’re all “How’d you do it?” “You look like
a model!” However, my male friends think
I’m too skinny now. Is there a big difference
in what the sexes consider a good body?

Though women assume that men think
the ideal female body shape is modeliciously
skinny, consider that construction workers
rarely yell out, “Hey, Hot Stuff! Great set of
ribs!”
In studies exploring men’s and women’s
ideas of the ideal female body weight, women
consistently “perceive men as being attracted
to thinner female figures than is true in real-
ity,” writes social psychologist Viren Swami.
And it isn’t just North American men who like
fleshier women. Swami ran a massive survey
– of 7,434 men and women in 26 countries,
across 10 world regions – and “men across
all world regions except East Asia selected
a significantly heavier figure as being most
physically attractive compared to what women
believed was most attractive to men.”
Swami and his colleagues speculate that
“women exposed to magazines marketed
to women may form skewed perceptions of
what body types are most appealing to men.”
But don’t despair. Swami’s study and others
measure the preferences of the “average” man.
There is no such person. Or, as an epidemi-
ologist friend of mine often reminds me,
there are “individual differences” – meaning
individuals’ preferences vary. In other words,
there are men out there who will be seriously
into a woman like you – a woman who can do
amazing feats in the bedroom, like removing
a pair of skinny jeans without calling 911 and
asking for firemen to come over with the Jaws
of Life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Manage
with bread and butter until God sends

proverb. Let’s analyze how this advice
might apply to you. First thing I want to know is,
have you been managing well with bread and
butter? Have you refrained from whining about
your simple provisions, resting content and
grateful? If you haven’t, I doubt that any honey
will arrive, ether from God or any other source.
But if you have been celebrating your modest
gifts, feeling free of greed and displeasure, then I
expect at least some honey will show up soon.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don’t

praying to the gods of luck and fate. I’ll take care
