Olympics Fan
Though he’s been moonlighting for the past thirteen
years as the president of one of China’s largest marketing
firms, Ogilvy Public Relations, Scott Kronick’s true passion
is the Olympic Games. He sits down to tell us just what’s
When was your first Olympic experience? 1976 in Montreal. It was just
me and my mom, and we went to see Mark Spitz swim for the US
Olympic team. Wow. Sounds like a great introduction to the Games.
What’s the most memorable Olympic experience you’ve had since then?
Where do you want me to begin? I worked with Carl Lewis … I had
great seats when Liu Xiang won his gold … I saw the women’s soc-
cer final between the US and Brazil. But, I think the highlight is just
the overall experience. You don’t really care about what sport you
see, you feel the competitive energy in the air – that’s the beauty!
We almost went to curling in Torino! You’ll probably see sports that
you would have never thought you’d go see, but it’s not about the
ticket you get. Whatever ticket is okay because it has the emotion and
that’s what ties me to it. For you, what sets the Olympics apart from
any other major sporting event? It’s like the com-
ing together of all the sports. There are so many
different sports and so many different athletes
of different natures, that’s really what makes it
quite special. But the other things that’s so cool
about the Olympics is the emo-
tion. I mean, there are coun-
tries that are at war, but they
come together to compete,
and there’s so much emotion
wrapped up in it that when they
play the anthem, it is really mov-
ing. So should non-sports fans be
concerned that they’ll be left out?
Oh no, it’s a big party. There are
people who just go for the parties
and don’t have any tickets. People
