INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE(s) (Lesson Objective(s)*)

After going over a PowerPoint and reading a short story, students will label a photosynthesis
Digital Diagram, scoring at least 3 out of 4 on a teacher created rubric.

NYS-CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards
Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems
NGSS Disciplinary Core Idea: LS2.A: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems
 Plants depend on water, light and air to grow.

Indicator: This will be evident when students read a text and successfully label a
diagram with the different elements of a photosynthetic reaction.

New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards
2nd Grade Speaking and Listening
Comprehension and Collaboration: 2SL2
 Recount or describe key ideas or details of diverse texts and formats.

Indicator: This will be evident when students complete a Flipgrid successfully

explaining the steps of photosynthesis.

ISTE Standards
Empowered Learner
 Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

Indicator: This will be evident when students use the digital diagram and a Flipgrid to
successfully explain the steps of photosynthesis.

Knowledge Constructor
 Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge,
produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and
others.

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)

Students will be shown a brief video of a Venus Fly Trap eating insects.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. Students will be shown a video of a Venus Fly Trap eating insects. (Have you ever seen a
plant eat a bug like in the video? You haven’t… Well then, how do you think plants eat?
Do plants even need to eat?)

2. Students will perform a turn and talk where they discuss the two previous question with
their neighbor. (Do plants need to eat? How do you think plants eat?)

3. Teacher will lead the class in a read aloud of Photosynthesis.

4. Teacher will re-read Photosynthesis to the class with frequent interruptions to review the
concept of photosynthesis. (What do all living things need in order to live? Where do
plants get their energy? What are the four things that plants rely on to survive? What
part of a plant is used to absorb nutrients from the soil? )

5. Teacher will continue reading to the class. (What do plants need to make their own food?
What process do plants use to make energy? How does photosynthesis help humans?

6. Class will review how to complete the Digital Diagram.

7. Students will now complete a Digital Diagram, where they will be asked to label the
different components of a photosynthetic reaction.

8. Students will be paired up and given the opportunity to compare their Digital Diagrams
and explain their choices to their partner.

9. To close the lesson, the teacher will review a correct, completed Digital Diagram.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

 Cooperative Learning (engaging groups of students in working together on a structured

activity)

Indicator: This will be evident when students engage in a turn and talk to discuss
whether or not plants eat and when students share their Digital Diagrams.

 Direct Instruction (explicit presentation of information)

Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher is teaching students about
photosynthesis.

 Demonstration (showing, explaining, clarifying the correct way to do something)

Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher shows and explains to the
students how to properly complete the Digital Diagram.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)

 The student who struggles with a speech impairment will be given the option to write out
the response or answer the question to the teacher assistant instead of posting it to
Flipgrid where the whole class can see.
 The student who struggles to focus and attend will be re-focused and re-directed through
the use of specific non-verbal cues.
 The student who impulsively calls out during class discussions will be monitored through
a Behavior Intervention Plan.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

 Multiple means of presentation – When presenting the Photosynthesis Powerpoint, I

will read the text aloud, show the words in written form and depict the concepts using
images to appeal to students with various learning styles.

 Multiple means of expression – By having to create a Flipgrid for the independent

practice, instead of a written assignment, it should be easier for students with poor
writing skills to demonstrate their understanding of cause and effect/how events play out
in a sequence. If students are not comfortable with using a Flipgrid, they will be allowed
to write out their response.

 Multiple means of engagement – Rather than just discussing photosynthesis, we will go

through the Photosynthesis PowerPoint, read Photosynthesis, watch two videos, and
students will get to complete a Digital Diagram and a Flipgrid.

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)
Students will label a photosynthesis Digital Diagram, scoring at least 3 out of 4 on a teacher
created rubric.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Following the lesson on photosynthesis, students will watch What is Photosynthesis?, before
filming a Flipgrid where they explain the steps involved in photosynthesis and why plants need
photosynthesis. Teacher will provide feedback based on accuracy.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES:
DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
Direct Teacher Intervention
 The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will complete the Photosynthesis
Worksheet, helping to reinforce the steps involved in photosynthesis.

Academic Enrichment
 The student will complete the Enrichment Worksheet.

[Enrichment Worksheet - Answers]

Name: Smarty Pants

Date: 7/31/18

1. Will a plant grow better in a field or in a closet? Why?

A plant will grow better in a field because there it can

get sunlight. A closet is too dark for photosynthesis
to happen.

2. Will a plant grow well if you forget to water it for 2 weeks?

Why or why not?

A plant won’t grow well if you forget to water it. Plants

need water in order for photosynthesis to occur.

3. Will a plant grow better in soil with lots of minerals or

soil with no minerals? Why?

Plants will grow better in soil with minerals because

plants need minerals to help themselves make energy.
