3G TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY
ATM in UMTS
3G transport technology
Where is ATM used?
Are there any alternatives to ATM?
What is meant by an “adaptation layer”?
Why is AAL 2 needed?
What is the meaning of ALCAP?
How can an ATM network be designed?
What will be the future of ATM?
Rapid growth of mobile Internet and other mobile services will result in increasing demand for higher data transmission
capacity. Based on WCDMA, UMTS is one of the evolving 3G mobile communications systems designed to meet this
demand. High bit rates for both circuit- and packet switched services allow several mobile multimedia in the same call,
e.g. data, chat, video and voice.
ATM, (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a compromise between circuit- and packet switched technologies. ATM is the
standardized transmission technique for assuring QoS and for supporting the variety of services offered by UMTS.
Course description
ATM in UMTS is a 2-day course. The course gives the participant a thorough understanding of how ATM is applied in
UMTS. The course describes the ATM adaptation layers and how ATM is adapted to suite different UMTS services.
Theory along with simulation examples, explain the differences between AAL2 and AAL5, which are important for the
performance of ATM in UMTS. Exercises illustrate e.g. how the dimensioning of the required ATM link is performed.

Prerequisites
The course is advanced and should be regarded as a continuation of the
Widermind course ATM Survey. Hence it is recommended that the partici-
pants have a basic understanding of transmission network planning.
