Buddhist Counseling
Buddhist counseling psychology starts with Buddha’s first
Dhamma preaching in Migadaya. Lord Buddha found the
permanent solution for the suffering. Buddha did a noble
research (Ariya pariyasena) to seek the truth and
wholesome which pertaining to attain ultimate happiness,
clam and peaceful stage of mind. Finally he comes up with a
perfect solution for disappointing people in their lives. In
Dhamma cakkapavattana sutta Buddha says before him no
any god, or Brahmin or any one did not preached or found
that kind of teaching. Lord Buddha is the first man who did
research about human mind and behavior.

“Buddhist Counseling Psychology

can be defining as Problem Prevention
rather Than Conflict Resolution.”

Child
Biologically, a child is a human being between the stages of
birth to puberty. He is a person who under 18 years in age.
Every child goes under several stages of social development.
When an infant play alone, a kid will play with another kid.
Children in age 4 to above mostly like to play with a group of
other kids. As Freud said there are 5 stages that should a
child come through in his life.
1. Oral stage (birth to 18 months)
2. Anal stage (18 months to 3 years)
3. Phallic stage (3 to 6 years)
4. Latency stage (6 to puberty)
5. Genital stage (puberty onwards)
Children sometimes need psychological help, just like adults
do. Treatments typically begin when parents, teachers or
school counselors notice that child isn’t functioning that as
he or she could.

Essential factors in Sutta
In this sutta Lord Buddha had mentioned about four
types of people from their behavior which starts
from birth. A behavior of a person can describe
about any person’s personality. As an example, a
behavior of a drug addictor is different from a monk
or nun.

තමමෝ තම පරායන Thamo Thama
Parayana
(Dark  Dark)
These types of people are currently doing everything
in a bad manner and continuously doing it again and
again. These types of people aren’t useful for
themselves and to the society. Sometimes even
though they knew it that their good for nothing
fellows they use to it. They don’t want to enhance
their lives to see an enlighten. He feels happier by
doing those things.
Ex: Criminals Murderers
තමමෝ ම ෝති පරායන Thamo Jothi

(Dark  Light)
These kinds of people are currently doing wrong. But
they have a desire to change. When they found out
that their wrong behavior they feel guiltiness about
themselves. They believe that if they could change
they can do something good to world.
Ex: some prisoners

(Light  Light)
These people are very valuable to the society. They
are doing everything in good manner and they are
mostly like exemplary persons to the society. They
always behave in social control. They use to think
everybody in highly regarded.
Ex: Monks Teachers Social Workers

ම ෝති තම පරායන Jothi Thama

Parayana

These types of people use to get do everything right,
but later on they went on the wrong track. When
they went on the wrong
track it becomes a
disaster. Sometimes
they can’t even control
themselves.

Solutions for present
situations
Mainly we have to focus on to types from those
person types.
තමමෝ ම ෝති පරායන (Dark  Light)
ම ෝති ම ෝති පරායන (Light 
Light)
Because they are the people who can change the
world in to a better place. Every problem in the
society demands a different approach and solution.
Some of the methods may require professional help
and in some cases persons can take certain measure
first to work things out through discussing matters
among themselves.

We can apply “Thamo Jothi Parayana” to the people

who prisoned for little mistakes. Some of they were
prisoned not because of their mistakes but because
of some other matter may cause. Apart from them
we also can use this Buddhist psychological method to
the school children. Because they are the ones who
take the future responsibilities. If we teach them
not to go on the wrong track and should go on the
right track they will easily understand. Because they

are kids and their minds didn’t get polluted by the
society.
Sympathy, love and kindness towards the fellows and
the society are going with “Jothi Jothi Parayana”.
These are the qualities that would color the world
beautifully. It is not enough to contain those qualities
in one’s heart but also express love and respect for
others. People who like to come out light from light
will inspire the world as a better place.
Those people are like leaders to the society. A leader
who can make everyone believe in himself and
generate the will to win it which would lead to the will
to work. The priority issues pertaining to this
country are tackling the problems of population and
poverty and a vision to accelerate productivity and
the pace of progress. So Gautama Buddha’s concepts
valid not only for past but also for present & future
too.

Conclusion
There are four main factors that should be known by
a person who is going to engage with the Buddhist
special consideration. So if the people have a good
capacity to understand that about reality and face it,
they may be able to have a meaningful life in order to
Gautama Buddha’s thoughts and he may be able to
understand what the real Buddhist nature is what is
more. Lord Buddha’s thoughts are priceless for all
time.
