Assignment 1

OBJECTIVES:
1. Use Smith chart in finding SWR, reflection coefficient and

Instruction: For the following problems
1. Use a printed smith chart
2. Verify your smith chart answer to a computed value if needed.
3. Properly label the points and state the equivalent value of that point.
4. Use one smith chart per problem

PROBLEM 1.
Use only one smith chart to plot the following impedances.

Consider the characteristic impedance of a 50 ohm transmission line and

the following load impedances, plot these impedances on the smith chart

𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐴: 𝑍𝐿 = 100 + 𝑗500 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐸: 𝑍𝐿 = 75 − 𝑗100

𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐵: 𝑍𝐿 = ∞ 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐹: 𝑍𝐿 = 0
𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐶: 𝑍𝐿 = 𝑗200 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐺: 𝑍𝐿 = 150
𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐷: 𝑍𝐿 = 50 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐻: 𝑍𝐿 = 184 − 𝑗900

PROBLEM 2.
A transmission line has a characteristic impedance of 50 ohm with a load
impedance of 𝑍𝐿 = 100 + 𝑗500. Using a smith chart, find:
a. SWR
b. Reflection coefficient
c. Input impedance looking 1.75𝜆 𝑎𝑛𝑑 0.125𝜆 from the load.
Mathematically:
𝑍𝐿 + 𝑗 𝑍𝑜 tan 𝛽𝑙
𝑍𝑖𝑛 = 𝑍𝑜 ( )
𝑍𝑜 + 𝑗 𝑍𝐿 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛽𝑙

Or if tan 𝛽𝑙 is undefined, you may use:

𝑍𝐿 cos 𝛽𝑙 + 𝑗 𝑍𝑜 sin 𝛽𝑙
𝑍𝑖𝑛 = 𝑍𝑜 ( )
𝑍𝑜 cos 𝛽𝑙 + 𝑗 𝑍𝐿 sin 𝛽𝑙
Problem 3
Determine the characteristic impedance of a quarter-wave transformer,
and the distance the transformer must be placed from the load to match a
50 ohm transmission line to a load 75 − 𝑗100

𝑍 ′ 𝑂 = 𝑍𝑜 𝑍𝐿 𝑍𝑖𝑛𝜆

Problem 4
For a transmission line with a characteristic impedance of 50 ohm and a
load with a complex impedance 100 + 𝑗500, determine the distance a shorted
stub must be placed from the load to the line and the length of the stub.
