FOREWORD

Over the last few decades,

there

has

been

a

virtual

revolution in the development of construction and computational techniques in Civil engineering. Much of these pertain to the field of soil/rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. From laser technology to artificial intelligence, high powered rotary hydraulic rigs to neural networks, the profession has seen it all.

There have been astounding developments in recent times to enhance knowledge, tools, and methods for adding value to construction projects. A lot of focus has been directed to development processes and management issues that drive and constrain progress, risks that threaten performance and means of improving construction.

Rapid development of numerical techniques, with easy access to high speed computers, has enabledengineers and researchers to tackle unprecedentedly difficult problems than ever before. New vistas in exploration and development in deep oceans and space, environmental geotechniques, risk assessment and mitigation, and the likes have opened up as a result of such advancements.

The Kolkata chapter of Indian Geotechnical Society realised that there is a growing need to improve our basic understanding of geotechniquesrelated to construction and computational tools. As the nodal point of geotechnical and related activities in the Eastern region, the local chapter appreciated the call of the hour to organise a National Seminar involving practicing engineers, academicians, geologists, geo-scientists,government and public authorities et al to discuss the state of the art about construction and computational tools in geotechnical engineering.

The organisers of this National Seminar are optimistic that the papers to be presented and the deliberations in this seminar will result in better understanding, appreciation and dialogue among experts and peers from different disciplines.

We sincerely hope to get your patronage and active support to make this seminar a significantly meaningful one.

DATES& VENUE
