Department Philosophy: It is the belief of the instructors in the Physical Education Department at ML
King High School that Physical Education is an integral part in the growth and development of an
individual. As a result of this philosophy courses within this department are designed to provide each
student with an opportunity to not only participate in various sports, conditioning and body development
exercises and coeducational activities but also learn to plan for fitness in order to live a happier and
longer life.

Course Description:
Compulsory Activities - Cardio Activities, Aerobic Focus, Muscular Strength and Endurance Training,
Flexibility Techniques, and Body Composition Monitoring
Supplemental Activities - Step Aerobics, Skills Training, Circuit Training, Fitness Games, Heart Rate
Monitoring, Run Walk Intervals, Nature walk Activities, Minor Weight lifting and more.

Work Ethic 25%
(Assessment Learning) Work Ethics for students in Health & Physical
Education classes is the evaluation during
class of a student’s effort to try to understand
and their willingness to do as they are asked.
Performance/Participation Participation in warm-up activities, work 45%
(Guided Group) period activities, and cool down activities
(Includes 10% for individual project)
Skill Tests/Written test Physical performance of skill and/or 30%
(Summative Assessment) providing explanation of the appropriate steps
to execute the skill
History, rules, and strategy of games/activities
Total: 100%

Required Materials:
* Dressing out properly is a requirement for participation in physical Education. F or safety reasons, students are
expected to wear proper attire and proper shoes when participating in an activity. Sandals, clogs and flip
flops are unacceptable for physical activity.
Dressing out over clothing (sweats over clothes) is not only unsanitary but not permitted
 $10.00 fee for uniform top
 Cash and Money Order are only acceptable forms of payment.
 Please discuss payment arrangements with teacher: if needed
• Individual lockers are available for each student.
• Students should use a combination lock. Key locks are discouraged. Please give the combination of your lock
to the teacher.
• Do not share lockers.
• All PE Clothes are to be taken home on Friday for washing.

Classroom Expectations:
 All school rules as listed in the student handbook will be enforced.
• Students have 10 minutes to dress out and report for roll call. Students will also have 10 minutes to
change for the next class.
• No food, drink, candy, hats or gum is allowed in the gym or locker room before, during or after PE class.
• Body lotions are not allowed in the gymnasium.
 No profanity.
 No hanging or grabbing of the basketball goals or nets.
• Students are responsible for the security of their own valuables.
• Disrespect of the rights, property and feelings of others will not be tolerated.

Late Assignments/ Make-up Policy/ Re-do Policy


• Students will be considered absent if they miss more than 10 minutes of class.
• A student that is absent will earn a grade of zero.
• An excused absence will be allowed to be made up. Make-up work must be returned within 3 days of the
absence. Only excused absences will be allowed to make-up work.
• A student who is in attendance but who is either too ill or injured to participate may be excused that day by
bringing a note from a parent. After 2 days of nonparticipation a doctor’s note is required.
• If a student cannot participate for a period of more than 15 days they will not receive credit for that class.
Doctor notes must be clear and specific in outlining any restrictions.
