Course Description
The curriculum will focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations,
including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and
systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative
relationships; (3) analyzing two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle similarity, and
congruence; and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
By the end of 8th grade, students will be able to:
● Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.
● Work with radicals and integer exponents.
● Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
● Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
● Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
● Use functions to model relationships between quantities.
● Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.
● Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
● Solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
● Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.
Curriculum Overview
The following academic concepts will be covered.
Quarter 1 Unit 1- Transformations, Congruence, Similarity
Unit 2- Exponents and Equations
Quarter 2 Unit 3- Geometric Applications of Exponents
Unit 4- Functions
Quarter 3 Unit 5- Linear Functions
Unit 6- Linear Models and Tables
Quarter 4 Unit 7- Solving Systems of Equations
Unit 8- High School Prep-- getting ready for 9th grade!
Coursework will be guided by the Georgia Standards for Excellence (GSE). These standards provide a rich
and in depth study of mathematics. The GSE can be found on the Georgia Department of Education website at
www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Pages/Math-6-8.aspx.
Clarke County uses a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded curriculum called Connected Mathematics 3
(CMP3). This curriculum was created as part of the Connected Mathematics Project at Michigan State
University. It was the highest rated textbook in Project 2061. This project evaluates science and math
textbooks in a systematic standards-based approach. In addition to this, we will be using OpenUp Resources,
Illustrative Mathematics, and other resources that are aligned with the GSE standards.
Class presentations and resources will be available for students on the class website, in a mathematics
notebook and/or in Google Classroom. Students will have offline access to their documents to reference at
home as needed.
Cheating will not be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating, they will automatically be assigned detention and
will have to re-do an alternate assignment to earn a grade. Parents will be notified if this occurs.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but
not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school
records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID
or password.
Academic Dishonesty: Receiving or giving information for an
assignment is cheating. When caught in the act, you will not receive
credit or the opportunity for a chance to make up the assignment.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. If you take information from the Internet
or any printed resource without a citation, it is considered plagiarism
and will result in a reduction in your overall grade. Parents will be
notified.
The following actions are considered to be cheating.
1. Using unauthorized materials in a test situation
2. Receiving unauthorized information on a test
3. Knowingly giving information in a test situation
4. Giving definite questions or answers to someone who have not taken
the test
5. Turning in work that is not your own
6. Communicating/talking/disruptive behavior during a test
7. Plagiarism
Label all assignments with name, date, and period on the right side.
Students will not receive an extension on work that is not yet due: Any
work that was announced prior to the day(s) of students absence is still
due the day that students return to school. Example: An assignment is
given on Monday and is due Friday. Student is absent Thursday. The
assignment is still due on Friday.
Extra Credit Extra credit opportunities, when provided, are not intended to replace
regular assignments. Instead, extra credit acts as opportunities to
improve students’ grades. Students may expect at least one extra
credit opportunity per semester.
The teacher reserves the right to adjust the course work and/or differentiate instruction as needed to
