Course Description

The standards in this course are organized around five conceptual categories: number and quantity, algebra, functions,
geometry, statistics, and probability. These standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to
real world issues and challenges; they prepare students to think and reason mathematically. This course sets a rigorous
definition of college and career readiness, not by piling topic upon topic, but by demanding that students develop a depth of
understanding and an ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, as college students and employees regularly do.

Curriculum Overview
Coordinate Algebra Units
Quarter 1 Unit 1- Relationships between Quantities
Unit 2- Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities
Unit 3- Linear and Exponential Functions
Quarter 2 Unit 4- Describing Data
Unit 5- Transformations in the Coordinate Plane
Quarter 3 Unit 6- Connecting Algebra and Geometry through Coordinates
Analytic Geometry Units
Quarter 3 Unit 7- Similarity, Congruence, and Proofs
Unit 8- Right Triangle Trigonometry
Quarter 4 Unit 9- Circles and Volume
Unit 10- Extending the Number System

Coursework will be guided by the Georgia Standards for Excellence (GSE). These standards provide a rich
and in depth study of mathematics. The GSE can be found on the Georgia Department of Education website at
https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Pages/Math-9-12.aspx.

We will be using the Frameworks provided by the Georgia Department of Education (found at the GaDOE
website), Illustrative Mathematics, and other resources that are aligned with the GSE standards.

Class presentations and resources will be available for students on the class website, in a mathematics
notebook and/or in Google Classroom. Students will have offline access to their documents to reference at
home as needed.

Clarke Middle Grading Procedure

● Formative Assignments: Assessments for Learning
o Count as 30% of the nine-weeks’ average
o Minimum of 8 assignments per nine-week period
● Homework/Classwork: Homework/classwork grades will count 10% of the final average for a nine-
week grading period. There will be at least one homework and/or classwork grade per week.
● Summative Assignments: Assessments of Learning
o Count as 60% of the nine-weeks’ average
o There will be 3-5 summative assignments per nine-week period

Cheating will not be tolerated. If a student is caught cheating, they will automatically be assigned detention and
will have to re-do an alternate assignment to earn a grade. Parents will be notified if this occurs.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

STUDENT PROGRESS Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and
thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students
shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate
deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate
interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. .

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but
not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school
records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID
or password.
Academic Dishonesty: Receiving or giving information for an
assignment is cheating. When caught in the act, you will not receive
credit or the opportunity for a chance to make up the assignment.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. If you take information from the Internet
or any printed resource without a citation, it is considered plagiarism
and will result in a reduction in your overall grade. Parents will be
notified.
The following actions are considered to be cheating.
1. Using unauthorized materials in a test situation
2. Receiving unauthorized information on a test
3. Knowingly giving information in a test situation
4. Giving definite questions or answers to someone who have not taken
the test
5. Turning in work that is not your own
6. Communicating/talking/disruptive behavior during a test
7. Plagiarism

LATE WORK There is rarely an opportunity to submit late assignments.

HOMEWORK Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an

application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all
times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be
considered the possession of the student and should be collected,
evaluated and returned to the students.

Homework: Homework is expected to be completed as assigned. If

parent/guardian approves, students may collaborate with a peer when
necessary to complete homework.

Homework is generally assigned 2-3 times per week! NO WORK NO

CREDIT! Problems, work, and solutions are required. Please check
the homework section on class website for homework assignments.

Class Work: Students are expected to complete class work. Students

who are not successful in class are those who do not attempt to do their
work. NO WORK NO CREDIT! All class work must have all of the
work shown for all problems.

Label all assignments with name, date, and period on the right side.

MAKE-UP WORK When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by

DUE TO ABSENCES Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of
the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s)
for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the
designated time allotted.

Make-up Work: Announced work, such as homework, quizzes, tests,

and other major assessments are due the day that students return to
school. For each day of excused absence, students will have one day
to make up missed work. Example: If a student was absent Monday
and Tuesday, they will have Wednesday and Thursday to make up your
work; it will be due on Friday.

Students will not receive an extension on work that is not yet due: Any
work that was announced prior to the day(s) of students absence is still
due the day that students return to school. Example: An assignment is
given on Monday and is due Friday. Student is absent Thursday. The
assignment is still due on Friday.

If you are absent under extenuating circumstances, special

arrangements can be made to make up work. STUDENTS MUST
TAKE OWNERSHIP TO REQUEST MISSED WORK.

Extra Credit Extra credit opportunities, when provided, are not intended to replace
regular assignments. Instead, extra credit acts as opportunities to
improve students’ grades. Students may expect at least one extra
credit opportunity per semester.

Extra Credit will not be accepted late.

*The math composition book will be a key component to the class. We
will keep a physical notebook and also have an organized set of
resources in Google Classroom and on our class website. Learning how
to be organized in math class is an important skill to master before high
school and will be crucial in this course.
EXTRA HELP
Tutorial will be offered September 2018- April 2019 on
TuesdayMornings at 8am in classroom (Time May Subject To Change)

PARENT INFORMATION Family involvement is an essential element for a child’s success in

mathematics. Be positive and support homework completion for your
child. Please do not complete homework for students! Be a guide for
your child by asking questions and listening, visiting online resources,
encouraging your child to take advantage of the tutorials, interactive
activities, and other online resources (reference teacher’s website). For
those with Internet access, please communicate with the teacher for
accommodations.

It is highly recommended to register for an Infinite Campus Parent

Portal account via the Clarke County School District website.
Students are encouraged to have their own account too!

Check Infinite Campus Parent Portal for your student’s grades
