Kaleidoscope Lessons TWO and THREE

Social Duration of Lesson TWO: ​20 min/per lesson

Emotional Learning Target:​ Students will develop an understanding of what it meant to compromise and will
recognize that compromise may involve the combination of listening to individual ideas and
blending them into one perspective.

Instructional Strategies:
Materials: ​paper, 1. Review the concept of multiple perspectives.

Read Aloud​: ​The

5. Discuss the art of listening to each other to reach a compromise.
a. Define compromise as a “win-win” where each person's idea gets included
i. Use arms and hands to illustrate compromise
ii. Then have students imitate symbols and ask how they ​feel/ if they can
notice a difference​ in the two gestures
1. Fold arms tightly to show “closed to compromise”
2. Open arms wide to show being “open to compromise” and
listening to other people’s perspectives. Highlight the importance
of listening to others to possibly reach better solutions.

6. Role play scenarios of real life classroom conflicts, which involve listening to others and seeking to
understand different perspectives to reach a compromise.
1. Write them on sticky notes, stick them on toolbox and support students when they are
“stuck” in the problem and what they can do to get “unstuck”

Duration of Lesson THREE: ​20 min/per lesson

Learning Target:​ Students will develop a definition of the word “compromise”

Instructional Strategies:
1. Divide students into small groups.
2. Give each student a piece of paper with one letter that spells out the word ‘compromise.’
3. Write the word on the board and have student work together to arrange themselves so that
re of the word is spelled correctly. (Each student has one letter).
4. Discuss how everyone worked together to participate in a fair manner.
5. Identify any compromises that were made.
6. Work with students to come up with a definition for “compromise.
