ABSTRACT: Bentonites are highly active soils having high percentage of montmorillonite,
thus they show substantial change in its behaviour leading to failure of many engineered
structures resting on it. One of the prominent behaviour that is causing enormous damage to
structures built on clay is associated with volume decrease i.e. shrinkage in saturated
compressible clay soil when water get evaporated. This study of shrinkage behaviour of clay
soil became mandatory both in Geoenviromental and Geotechnical field. This Shrinkage
behaviour of clay is highly influenced by the type of pore fluid with which it comes in
contact. This paper will focus on the effect of pore fluids on shrinkage behaviour of different
sodium bentonites with varying clay contents and surface properties. Different pore fluids
will be used to understand how volume and water content of bentonites will change when it
comes in contact with it. Available volume measurement techniques will be conducted and
Volumetric Shrinkage Curves (VSC) will be plotted to obtain the Shrinkage limit values. Pore
fluids at different concentrations will be used and comparisons of Volumetric Shrinkage
Curves obtained will be done for better understanding of how Shrinkage limit is changing.
The fundamental mechanism responsible for the moisture content at the shrinkage limit will
be brought out.
