Allowable shear on blot is 93 MPa, allowable bearing stress on contact area is 186 MPa.

Problem 3

Problem 4
The 300 mm wide, 8 mm thick steel plate is attached to another plate by three 25-mm diameter

Determine the safe tensile load P the connection can resist.

Ans:
Due to Shear-284.22kN
Due to Bearing-295.2 kN
Due to Tension
Gross-357.12 kN
Net-351.29 kN
Block Shear-238.85 kN

Problem 5

Problem 6
A plate with width of 400 millimeters and thickness of 12 millimeters is to be connected to a plate
of the same width and thickness by 34 millimeters diameter bolts, as shown in the figure. The holes

a.) Calculate the value of b in millimeters.
b.) Calculate the value of the net area for tension in plates in square millimeters.
c.) Calculate the value of P so that the allowable tensile stress on net area will not be exceeded.

a.)19.71 mm
b.)3623.65 mm^2
c.) 539.20 kN

diameter A490 bolts in standard holes as shown in the figure.
Problem 8
Determine the adequacy of the fasteners in the figure shown, when 22-mm-diameter A325 bolts are
used in a bearing-type connection with threaded excluded from shear planes. Assume the strength

Problem 9
The connection shown in the figure consists of 10 A490 bolts and is attached to the column flange.
The bolts are subject to shear and tension in a bearing-type connection with no threads in the shear
plane. Assume the strength of column flange and the plates does not govern the strength.
a.) Investigate the adequacy of the bolts if P=300 kN
b.) Determine the safe value of P.

Problem 10

mm. for this problem a = b = 250 mm. the load is transmitted to the column by the plates and eight
22-mm-diameter rivets. The plates are adequate to transmit the load to the rivets. The connection
can be analyzed by replacing the given load with an equivalent loading composed of a vertical force
alone acting through the centroid of the rivets and a moment.
a.) Calculate the maximum shear stress in the rivets for equivalent vertical force alone acting
on the centroid.
b.) Calculate the maximum shear stress in the rivets for the equivalent moment alone acting at
the centroid.
c.) Calculate the maximum shear stress rivets.
