Toward an Effective Implementation of Blended Learning: Exploring Teachers’ and Students’
Use of Canvas in Senior High School

Purpose Statement
The paradigmatic shift the Jose Rizal University has taken this year to implement Blended
Learning program in its Senior High School (SHS) division is undoubtedly the University’s
commitment to its vision to be “a market leader in the use of technology for innovation in
teaching and learning to produce graduates of social importance” (JRU Vision). However, much
has been said about blended learning. Every day, every meeting, we hear different stories from
our SHS students about Canvas, the platform used to deliver the blended learning being so much
of a hassle and inefficient. Many students have frowned at how Canvas could be disappointing to
them due to its complexity and unfriendly interface and what is even alarming is that teachers
also share the same sentiments with students. It is from this standpoint that we wish to
investigate teachers’ and students’ use of Canvas for blended learning in our SHS division. We
are interested in exploring the readiness of teachers and students towards Canvas and other
relevant factors that might have caused the struggles shared. After understanding the root cause
of the problems, we hope to offer an action plan through try outs to see if the implementation of
Canvas will have improved then. As teachers of the 21 st century, we strongly support the
assumption that the integration of technology in education is essential. Hence, finding ways to
solving problems that seem to hinder the effective implementation of the technology-enabled
education such as blended learning through Canvas is indispensable.
