UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES
1 Background
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest and most popular
public university in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of
Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on the Observation Hill, and 13
kilometres from the city centre. It was established on 1st July 1970, through
Parliament Act No. 12 of 1970. Recently, the Universities Act No. 7, of 2005
repealed Act No. 12 of 1970 and all the enabling legal instruments of the
constituent colleges. Prior to 1970, the University College, Dar es Salaam
had started in 1961 as an affiliate College of the University of London. It had
only one faculty – the Faculty of Law, with 14 students. In 1963 it became a
Constituent College of the University of East Africa together with Makerere
University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya.
Since 1961, the University of Dar es Salaam has grown in terms of student
intake, academic units and academic programmes.
1
1.1 Student Intake
The number of students enrolled at the University of Dar es Salaam has been
increasing steadily, from 14 in 1961 to 26186 24,341 (16,61816,063 male
and 9,5688278 female) undergraduate degree students in the 20176/20187
academic year. Female students constitute 36.54% of all undergraduate
students.
2 UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
The University of Dar es Salaam offers various undergraduate academic
programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas and first degrees.
A total of 4 certificates, 3 diplomas and 88 bachelor degree programmes are

2.1.21 Admission of Short-term/Occasional Students
Short-term students are admitted into undergraduate degree programmes for
duration of one academic year while occasional students are admitted for
duration of one semester. Students may simply attend courses or in addition
sit for examinations and the grades submitted to their home universities. The
entrance qualifications are the same as those for admission into regular
undergraduate degree courses or equivalent. Applications are submitted
through the applicant‟s University/College which then writes a
recommendation letter. Detailed information on the admission of Short-
Term/Occasional Students can be obtained from the published University
Prospectus.
3 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates wishing to be enrolled at the University of Dar es Salaam to
pursue the various undergraduate degree and non-degree programmes have
