INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION

• Senior Structural Engineer With Jacobs

• 6 year post graduation experience
• Specialization in Bridge Engineering
• Have rich experience in many National as well as
International Project
• Jacobs was founded in 1947
• Jacobs is very diversified company and has 54000
employee with offices at 230+ locations.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
KEY POINTS

• Major Bridge of Total length 320m divided in to 10 equal

spans of length 32m.
• Bridge Structure interfaces with the Ramp P1 and Ramp
P2.
• Significant settlements are expected for fill height > 0.8m
which has required to extend the bridge superstructure
further than would typically be adopted.
• Limited width of project land has imposed staging
requirement that will require the bridge to be constructed
in 2 halves.
KEY POINTS

• Bridge includes 10 span of which 6 spans are simply

supported and 4 spans are integral
• Use of Construction stage analysis to get actual deflection
and load distribution.
• Use of Composite stage analysis to capture differential
composite action
• Three models are prepared in Midas Civil 2018 V1.2 for
design analysis of Bridge.
KEY PLAN
ARCHITECTURAL VIEW
SUPER-T v/s I GIRDER
Advantage of Super-T over I Girder

• PSC Super T-Girders are currently the most prevalent girder type for
spans in the order of 25 – 36 m
• For Super T-Girders steel tub void formers are to be used, producing an
open void which facilitates ease of inspection
• The Super T's are more efficient structural form
Advantage of Super-T over I Girder

• Less time involved with the super T in relation to labor and

construction which is the major driver in Australia
• Constructing the diaphragms in between the I girders is an
extremely painful process for contractor whereas no such issue
in Super T's
• Services conduits can be hidden in-between the super T's much
easily and access those services for maintenance purposes fairly
easily.
WHY MIDAS CIVIL
Modelling Option

• Importing Grillage from AutoCAD

PC Composite Bridge Wizard

• Wizards are extremely useful when bridge is constructed

through the typical construction process
LINK- RIGID & ELASTIC

• Bearings can be modelled as Elastic Link

Quantity Estimate

• Bill of Material

How We Modelled

• Full 3D Grillage Model in Midas Civil

• Use of construction stage to obtain time dependent

behavior of concrete with control articulation of Support

• Use of Composite stage to manipulate composite action

Structural Frame
Phase Construction

• The Bridge is to be constructed in to 2 Primary Phases, Phase A

and Phase B to allow Mackenzie Road open to Traffic
Phase construction
Stage1

• Activate the Pile of phase A Construction

Stage 2

• Activate Cross head Over pile of Phase A Construction

Stage 3

• Activate super T Over Crosshead of Phase A construction

• Activate Simply supported support condition
• Apply self weight and prestressed Load
Stage 4

• Activate Composite action of Phase A Girders

• Change Boundary condition of first two span to make it integral.
• Apply SIDL over phase A girder
Stage 5

• Activate Phase B structure in the similar manner and apply SIDL

Loads
• Cast stich portion of 500mm
CONCLUSION
Conclusion

• The use of midas Civil software made it possible to model the

complex geometry and behavior

• Prestressed Cable profile and strands number can be easily

decided.

• Clashing of cable can be checked by using coordinate output of

Cable given by software

• Seismic analysis can be done easily by using auto load to mass
