I. Explain the following terms :

1.Manure : Manure is an organic matter formed by the decomposition of animal and plant remains. It contributes
to the fertility of the soil.

2. Beasts of burden : Animals that are used to carry heavy loads or draw carts are called the beast of burden.
E.g.: Elephants , horses

3. Herbivores or primary consumers: They are animals which only depend on plants for their food.

E.g. : Cows, goats

4. Carnivores or secondary consumers : They are animals which depend on other animals for their food.

E.g. : lions, tigers ,wolves.

5. Omnivores : They are animals which eat both plants and flesh of other animals. E.g. :crows, bears

6. Pollination : The process of transfer of pollen grains from one flower to another is called pollination.

7. Scavengers: The animals which feed on dead animals are called scavengers . E.g. : Vultures, hyena

8.Photosynthesis : The process by which green plants prepare their food with the help of chlorophyll pigment, in
presence of sunlight using water , minerals and carbon dioxide is called photosynthesis.

II. Answer the following questions :

1. List any four useful items provided by plants.


 Plants provide food grains, pulses, fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, sugar, spices cooking oil etc.
 Plants yield important fibres like cotton, jute and coir.
 Wood of trees is used for making furniture as well as door and window frames.
 Wood pulp of trees are used to make paper.

2. Why do human beings depend on animals?

Ans : Human beings depends on animals for their livelihood. Animals help them in different occupations.

3. Why are animals called the consumers?


Animals are dependent on plants for food directly or indirectly .Thus animals are called consumers or
heterotrophs.
4. Pashmina shawls are very expensive. Why ?

Ans : Pashmina shawls are made from the hair of goat that is found in very high altitudes . Making of shawl is a
very long and difficult process. Weavers of Kashmir spend 250 hours making a single shawl . That is why it is
very expensive.
