Table 1: Summary of Assessment Task and Criteria

Assessment Telling Time

Task Title

Type of Pre test and post test (written 10 minute test, with a short answer
Assessment format).
 Pre Test: designed to act as a diagnostic tool to see what the
students already know about time. Results will show what
students already know and their areas of need in the sequence.
This will be a key tool to influence the planning of the sequence.
 Post Test: will act as a summative assessment. Results will show
if students have individually improved from the post-test (as it has
exactly the same questions), and to see any gaps in knowledge.
The tests can also be collated to show whole class improvement.
When will Pre test: conducted within the first 10 minutes of the first time lesson in
assessment the sequence.
take place? Post-test: conducted in the last 10 mins of the last lesson in the
sequence.
Links to Victorian Curriculum for Year 1 and how it links to questions in the
Curriculum tests:
Describe duration using months, weeks, days and hours (VCMMG097) (VCAA
2018).
 Question 1: ordering days of the week.
 Question 2: writing down the month that comes after February.
 Question 3: how many minutes are in an hour?

Tell time to the half-hour (VCMMG096) (VCAA 2018).

 Question 4: drawing of a clock.
 Question 5: completing clock times showing o’clock and half past
time.

Assessment The tests will be assessed using the below criteria. The tests will be
Criteria equated to a score out of 14 and then placed into an Excel spread sheet.
For some questions half marks may be given in specific cases. For
example, if a student correctly draws on half past 6, however the two
clock hands are the same length (no obvious short and long hand), a half
mark will be given.
The data in Excel will be placed into separate pre-test and post-test data
for each student and then calculated together to find the Effect Size and
to graph the results of improvement over the sequence.
A colour coding system will also be used.
Red: student got 0 on a question – area of concern.
Yellow: student got less than full marks however more than zero – area
for development.
Green: student received full marks on that question – demonstrates
comprehending of that area of time.

Q.1 One mark for each day of the week.

Q.2 One mark for correct month (March)
Q.3 One mark for correct answer (60mins)
Q.4 3 marks: one for all 12 numbers in order / one for clock hands / one for correct
spacing of numbers: 3 opposite 9
Q.5a One mark for each question on o'clock
Q.5b One mark for each question on half past.
Feedback Individual goal and a class goal.
to students  Class goal: to practice half past time and to be able to display it in
analogue and digital forms.
 Individual goals: based on short conversations with students
about the test, and together selecting one area for improvement as
a goal (E.g. working on correctly ordering days of the week).

The feedback to students will be given verbally and briefly through a

short conference. Idea is for the student and teacher to come up with a
learning goal together, rather than the teacher saying what the goal
should be for the student.

The feedback (learning goal) will be written down on paper/ sticky note,
and attached to the pre-tests, for future reference and for ease of
referring back to.
Assessment The criteria for marking the tests will be important to refer back to, and
support to ensure both the pre and post tests are being marked against the same
material criteria.
An Excel spread sheet will also be utilised for convenient marking of
tests, making comparisons, and for graphing results.
