MNPS was able to participate because the district’s percentage, which is how Tennessee measures poverty in schools, was at 60
percent during the application process four years ago. Since then, our direct certification percentage has dropped to 50 percent.
As a result, MNPS is no longer eligible and cannot offer this program to all students at all schools.
What schools will be affected next year?
• 29 schools will go back to the traditional free- and reduced-meals application system. These schools will require an application
for eligible students to receive free- or reduced-price lunches.
• 120 schools will continue to provide lunch at no cost to all students under CEP.
• All schools will serve breakfast at no cost to all students next year.
We know we have children who rely on our nutrition services program as a reliable source for a healthy meal. In this school year,
breakfast will still be provided to all students in all schools and 120 schools will continue to offer lunches at no cost to all students.
Students attending the remaining 29 schools will have the option to apply for free- and reduced-price lunch.

Price List for Non-CEP schools:
Elementary School Student Lunch - $2.50
Middle School Student Lunch - $2.75
High School Student Lunch - $3.50
Buses
• Obey the bus drivers’ instructions
• Remain in your seat on the bus
• Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself
• Talk quietly
• Students who live at least 1.25 miles from school may ride the bus
• Bus drivers must approve any requests for additional passengers-this must occur a day in advance of the request
A bus driver’s job is an EXTREMELY difficult task. The school makes every effort to support them in their efforts to be effective,
responsible, and safe. Bus discipline is handled using progressive discipline. Should a driver bring a child into the office and file a
formal complaint, the student is given a warning. Additional trips to the office will result in a gradual loss of bus privileges, in some
cases; students may lose the privilege of bus transportation for the remainder of the school year.
Cafeteria: Students should enter cafeteria in an orderly manner and seat in their assigned area or where their teacher assigns them.
Students should proceed quickly and quietly to their designated cafeteria line. Keep hands and feet to self. No throwing food or other
objects Do not leave the cafeteria without permission without being escorted by a class room teacher or a pass from the cafeteria
monitor. Must remain seated unless given permission to move. Maintain Level 1 voices. Students should ensure all trash is cleared
from table and placed in appropriate trash cans.
Cell Phones
Please refer to cell phone policy located in the addendum.
Communication
Our school utilizes MNPS Infinite Campus portal app and Remind 101 to ensure all parents are informed of their child’s grades and
also receives text alerts to remain current on classroom activities. Please ensure you have signed up for both apps in order to stay up to
date with the latest information. Instructions are available with your child’s teacher or at the front office Teachers do use every minute
of the instructional day so please allow at least 24 hours for voicemails and emails to be returned in a timely manner.
Conferences
Our faculty is ready to discuss any concerns you might have about your child and his/her experiences at our school. To protect the
instructional time of our students, please call and arrange a convenient time to meet with your child’s teacher during their planning
time.
Custody
Custodial parents are encouraged to provide the school with all current and relevant legal documentation showing any restrictions to a
natural parent’s visitation. If this is not provided, a parent proving legitimate connection to a student has parental rights under the
non-custodial legal provisions of access. This includes all student records and could involve release of the student, if we have not
received documents proving otherwise.
Early Dismissal
Teachers use every minute of the instructional day and early releases create a disruption for students. No students will be dismissed
after 3:30 pm. Exclusions to this policy include religious training, doctor/dentist visits, guidance sessions, or other activities approved
by the principal. We do not accept changes in a child’s transportation over the phone. You must send a note to the front office
and we will call to verify there is a change.
Excuse notes
In the event your child is absent from school please turn in all excuse notes to the side office to the attendance clerk, Ms. Connie
Gavin. Please turn in all excuses for absences within 24 hours of absence.

1. Sending student TNReady and MAP results home annually
2. Sending Report Cards after each grading period
3. Sending Progress Reports home in the middle of each grading period

Students and parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher with any questions or concerns with individual student needs.
Homework Policy
Homework is an extension of classroom learning. All classes will have homework at least three to four nights a week. It is suggested
that the amount of homework not exceed 30 minutes for grades K-2 and 45 for grades 3 - 4.
Illness
• Your child’s health is extremely important to us, and we need your help in maintaining a healthy environment for all of our
children. Please be protective of your child and other children by not sending your child to school if he/she exhibits any of
the following signs of illness: fever above 100 degrees, diarrhea, vomiting. Any child with these symptoms must be kept at
home a full 24 hours without symptoms before returning to school.
• Head Lice – If your child should become infested with head lice (live bugs), it is the policy of the district that he/she may not
return to school until you have obtained a statement from your physician or the Health Department stating that your child is
lice free. You may visit Lentz Health Center for a health care release (free of cost). A student’s absence will only be excused
for three days following being sent home for infestations.
• Strep Throat – Students should not return to school until at least 24 hours after beginning antibiotic therapy and being fever
free.
• Communicable Disease – If a child develops chickenpox, mumps, measles, strep throat, or “pink eye”, your child must have
a doctor’s statement stating the child is not contagious and may return to school.
Kickboard

the outside on the envelope:
• Child’s name
• Teacher’s name
• Amount enclosed
• Purpose of sending the money
Checks are permitted. Any checks returned for insufficient funds will eliminate that family’s privilege of writing a check to the
school or the cafeteria. A significant fee will also be charged by our check collection agency.
Office Routines
• Come into the office quietly without disturbing others and their work
• Written permission should be presented, or student should have an official hall pass
• Wait quietly and patiently for someone to assist you. Please allow additional time if you need medication
• Ask permission from the secretary or appropriate staff before you use the telephone
• In the event of inappropriate behavior such as screaming, cursing, walking behind the office counter without permission,
and/or causing a general disruption of the school environment visitors to the office will be held accountable for their actions
which could result in further disciplinary proceedings

Addendum
All Electronic Devices (i.e. cell phones, headphones, iPods, iPads, speakers, etc.) must be turned
off at 8:55AM. Students are permitted to have their cell phone on their person. Cell phones are not
permitted to be used during instruction unless approved by the instructional teacher. Cell phones are not
to be used during transitions, lunch, or restroom time. Students are free to use their phones after they are
dismissed at 3:55PM each school day. Cell phones may not be used during Morning Tutoring or After School
Detention.
Parents, if you need to contact your child, we ask that you call the main office at 615-885-8827. We are
more than happy to relay your message to your child. Because your child is immersed in a structured learning
environment from 8:55 am - 3:55 pm, we ask that parents, guardians, and other outsiders refrain from
attempting to contact your child during regular school hours on their device.
Students found in violation of the above policy will be asked to forfeit their device. The device will be
labeled, given to office staff, and locked away until a parent or guardian comes to retrieve the device. He/she
will receive a consequence for violating Code 203 in the 2018-19 MNPS Student Handbook; Electronic
Devices: Improper Use of Cell Phone, Internet or Electronic Devices. Any student who refuses to forfeit their
device will be faced with further disciplinary action. Multiple violations of this policy could lead to disciplinary
action up to suspension from school.
Cell phone use at school is often the source of distractions, bullying, threats, fights, and theft. Apps such
as Instagram, Snapchat, Kik, and other similar sites are often used by teens as a camping ground to participate
in these activities. Please have regular conversations with your child and monitor their access to these sites. We
appreciate your support and understanding.

PARENT/STUDENT SIGNATURE PAGE DUPONT TYLER MIDDLE SCHOOL
2018-2019
Dear Students and Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
This handbook was developed as a guide for students and parents and to answer commonly asked questions that
may arise during the course of the school year. Our goal is to create a positive educational atmosphere of
learning where the 5 R’s (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready, Be Resourceful, Be Reliable) are enforced
firmly, fairly, and consistently to all students. We ask that you familiarize yourself with this handbook by
reading it and ask that you sign this page as evidence that you are aware of our policies and procedures. To
view and download the handbook please visit www.mnps.org/handbook and https://schools.mnps.org/dupont-
tyler-middle-prep.
Signing below is evidence that parents and students have or will read and understand the contents of this
handbook. We are committed to working as partners with our staff, parents, and students in order to create a
positive learning environment.
All schools receiving Title I funds are required to develop, jointly with parents, a written Parent Involvement
Policy which includes a School-Parent Compact. These documents establish the school’s expectations and
specifically describe how the school will meet the required components of the policy. Included in our parent-
student handbook is a copy of our “draft/revised” Parent Involvement Policy and School-Parent Compact. We
want to hear your suggestions on how to make these documents better. Please list any suggestions you have for
changes below. Additionally, you may contact Mr. Andres Rischer for additional feedback and suggestions at:
Andres.Rischer@mnps.org
Please check your agreement with the parent involvement policy and school-parent compact below. Thank you!
The Parent Involvement Policy is fine as written.
