Definition of Visual Design

Visual design is a kind of communication through the eyes. These communications are usually
through the thinking / planning, creative, and both aesthetic and practical, and using "visual" as a
communication bridge.

Visual design elements

What are the design elements and principles?

Visual design as language, language includes grammar and the application of the text.
Design elements are similar as the text, and the design principles are also equal to grammar.

The basic elements of visual design

Color
Colors are different wavelengths of light. It is through human eyes and brain produce
different results. Human perceiving colors is not only depending on the physical properties of
light, but also by the surrounding environment and the impact of color. In visual design, color
is often used to express different emotions and mood.

Primary Colors : for optics (RGB) and for printings (CMYK)

RGB
Color perceived by human eye is due to different wavelengths of light, the three
strongest wavelengths are red, green and blue.
Human feels almost all of the colors, which are
combinations of the three colors.

CMYK
In paintings, colors absorb light rather than
emit lights, and therefore, they have to absorb
the individual red, green and blue colors, that is
their complementary color: cyan, magenta and
yellow. In theory, mixing three primary colors in
printings will result in black, but in fact it won’t
be that perfect to have a real black, so in
printing, an extra black color will be added, that
is “K”, to fill the inefficiency.

Color Mixing
There are 2 types of color mixing : Additive color mixing
and Substantive color mixing.

 Additive color mixing means mixing

colors for optics, and there will finally
be a white color if mixing all primary
colors together.
 Substantive color mixing means mixing
colors for printings, and there will finally be
a black color if mixing all primary colors
together.

different color depth. Hence, different types of color mode can be constructed.
