National foreword

This Part of this British Standard, published under the direction of the
Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee, forms one of a series on
lifting chain and is identical with ISO 1835 “Short link chain for lifting
purposes—Grade M (4) — Non-calibrated for chain slings etc.” published
in 1980 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The United Kingdom has taken part in the preparation of the International
Standard through Subcommittee 1 of Technical Committee 111, Round steel link

chains, chain wheels, lifting hooks and accessories.

This Part of this standard is a revision of BS 4942-2:1973, which was related to
ISO/R 1835:1971, although the text was not identical. The 1973 edition
of BS 4942-2 is withdrawn with publication of this revision. It is also intended
that this Part of this standard will in due course supersede BS 1663:1950 “Higher
tensile steel Grade 40 (short link and pitched or calibrated) for lifting purposes”.
Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has
been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without
deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those
used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to the following.
The comma has been used throughout as a decimal marker. In British Standards
it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline as the decimal marker.
Wherever the words “International Standard” appear referring to this standard
they should be read as “British Standard”.

Additional information. It will be noted that clause 9 requires a quality mark
to be applied and alternative marks are permitted i.e. “M” or “4”. Manufacturers
are recommended to adopt the mark “M” as the quality mark for this grade of
chain, in order to align with the marking of other materials and components in
this grade. The use of either “M” or “4” as the quality mark is however acceptable
for compliance with this British Standard.
