12.4 Lamp Replacement
REPLACE LAMPS EVERY 1000 HOURS
The lamps should be replaced every 1000 hours because the spectral power distribution gradually changes
as the lamps age. To maintain a reasonably consistent spectral power distribution the lamps, therefore,
need to be replaced every 1000 hours, even if the irradiance is still holding set point. If for some reason the
lamps are less than 1000 hours old and the irradiance is less than the set point, the lamp should also be
replaced,
‘As the lamps age, they operate at a higher wattage and produce more heat in the chamber. If you are
running a test that requires a low chamber temperature, and are having trouble maintaining that low
temperature, it might help to replace older lamps with new ones.
Monitoring Lamp Age — The total lamp operating hours are monitored by the controller. This value can be
accessed in the diagnostic mode on the controller. To access this value, press “?" on the controller. Using
the up/down arrow keys, scroll to Diag. 14. This value is the total amount of hours that the lamps have
been operating since the unit was built.
‘The lamps may be hot. Hit the STOP button. This will turn off the lamps, but the
blower will continue to run and cool the lamps. After 15 minutes, the lamps should
be cool enough to handle. Before opening the lamp door, shut off power to the
machine. On the Q-Sun Xe-3, this is accomplished by turning the external
disconnection switch off. On the Q-Sun Xe-1, this is accomplished by unplugging
the unit’s power cord. Always re-calibrate the system after changing lamps.
Removing the Lamp - The lamp access door is opened with a flat blade screwdriver. There is a
screwdriver mounted on the inside of the lower access door on the Q-Sun Xe-3. This screwdriver will also
be used to change the lamps. (Figures 75a and 75b)

Once the lamp door is opened (Figures 75a & 75b), the lamp housing with the low irradiance lamp needs to
be removed. First, the cable from the lamp housing must be disconnected from the ballast (the lamp power
easupply). To disconnect this cable, grasp the silver colored plug on the upper end of the cable. By pulling
straight away from the ballast, the plug will automatically disengage. (Figures 76a and 76b)

‘The lamp housing is secured with a captive screw. Tum this captive screw counter-clockwise to loosen it,
IF itis too tight to unloosen by hand, a screwdriver can also be used. (Figures 77a and 77b)

CAUTION: The lamp, especially the ends, gets very hot during operation. Please allow adequate
time for the lamp to cool down before removal. Turn the lamps off and allow the blower to blow on
them for a minimum of 15 minutes before handling
To remove the lamp from the lamp housing, gently grasp the round knob shown in Figure 79. When this
knob is pulled back, the lamp can be removed from the button that holds it in on the other end, When
discarding the lamp, care should be taken to not break the glass. fit is desirable to disable the lamp before
discarding it, clip off the wire leads from the lamp.
Before installing the new lamp, clean the trigger finger, mirrors and filters as described in Sections 12.2 and
123.
