TITLE :Experiment 2.2 : ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE AND INTERNAL RESISTANCE

INSTRUMENT :SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION EXPERIMENT REPORT

INSTRUCTION:
1. Carry out the experiment in the lab to collect and record the data then interpret the data and make a
conclusion.
2. Write a task report

APPARATUS: Dry cell holder, 2 pieces of 1.5 V dry cell, ammeter (0-1 A), voltmeter (0-5 V), rheostat (0-15 ),
switch, and connecting wires.

Rheostat
1. The apparatus is set up as shown in the diagram above.
2. Close the switch and adjust the rheostat until the ammeter gives a small reading.
3. Record the ammeter reading, I and the corresponding the voltmeter reading, V.
4. Repeat the experiment by adjusting the rheostat to give four sets of reading with increasing current.
5. Plot a graph of potential difference, V against current, I.

Discussion:
1. Based on your graph;

PI,P2,P3 Graph: Title - The graph of potential difference, V against current, I.
Label y-axis The potential difference, V and x-axis ; The current, I.
Discussion;
1.(i) The potential difference, V of the cell decreases as the current, I, increases.
CIV P5 (ii) Extrapolation the graph and show the value when I = 0.0 A
(iii) ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE

CIV P4 2. r = -gradient
=-( - ) = - (- ) = ……………
( - )
CIV P6 Conclusion
1. The value of the electromotive force, E of a cell is equal to the vertical intercept of the V-I graph
2. The value of the internal resistance, r is equal to the absolute value of the gradient of the V-I
graph
CIV P7 Precaution; Make sure the circuit was switched off when no reading is taken.
