Directions: Print this questionnaire, fill up above template for your name and schedule, and
then answer each problem completely. Use long bond papers with half-inch border using the
front pages only. Show all solutions neatly, then box all final answers. Staple your papers at
the upper left corner of the page.
Note: This problem set weighs about the equivalent of one final quiz and two assignments.
Please note that problem sets with incorrect format especially those with dirty, untidy, or
unreadable handwriting or solutions will not be graded at all (zero score!).
Deadline: The deadline for submission is on Monday, March 19, 2018. Late papers will not
be accepted for any reason.

6. Initially 100 milligrams of a radioactive substance was present. After 6 hours the mass had
decreased by 3%. If the rate of decay is proportional to the amount of the substance present at
time t, find the amount remaining after 24 hours.
7. Polonium-210 has a half-life of 140 days. (a) If a sample has a mass of 200 mg, find a
formula for the mass that remains after t days. (b) Find the mass after 100 days. (c) When
will the mass be reduced to 10 mg?
8. A thermometer is taken from a room where the temperature is 20oC to the outdoors, where the
temperature is 5oC. After one minute the thermometer reads 12oC.
a. What will the reading on the thermometer be after one more minute?
9. A small metal bar, whose initial temperature was 20°C, is dropped into a large container of
boiling water.
a. How long will it take the bar to reach 90° C if it is known that its temperature increases by
2°C in 1 second?
10. Consider a tank used in certain hydrodynamic experiments. After one experiment the tank
contains 200 liters of a dye solution with a concentration of 1 gram per liter. To prepare for
the next experiment, the tank is to be rinsed with fresh water flowing in at a rate of 2 liters
per minute, the well-stirred solution flowing out at the same rate. Find the time that will
elapse before the concentration of dye in the tank reaches 1% of its original value.
