1. Title (horror movie): The Grudge 3

2. Introduction
It was once said by H.P. Lovecraft; ‘The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest
and the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown’.
As a genre, horror has been established with us since the late 1700s and came into many different
forms. Due to the evolution of horror genre, it (horror) has invaded the film industry with movies that
are more graphic than its beginning.
Horror film or sometimes called horror movies; is a genre that primarily focusses on the creation of a
sense of fear, panic, alarm and dread for the audience. These films are often characterized as being
horror in a way that is unsettling and most probably aiming at scaring the audience through a portrayal
of their unpleasant fears and nightmares. Though it has its own style, horror movie often overlaps into
Fantasy, Thriller, and Science fiction and it is usually centered on the existence of an evil force, person,
or event. Not only that, the mythical creatures used such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies and their
settings, symbols used, literary devices, and the different type of conflicts are all account for that nature.

And so in this analysis, we are going to analyze a horror movie entitled ‘The Grudge 3’. Further on that,
the analysis will mainly elaborate on the basic components or elements of horror genre, specifically: the
settings (i.e. when and where the film was set), the different types of characters involved, the plot
summary which is the order of events as they happen in the film, the different conflicts occur, symbols
that are decisively used to represent or symbolizes certain behaviors and nature in the film and finally
the theme of the movie which is ‘Revenge’. In addition to that, there are two (2) other extremely potent
literary device that are deliberately used in the horror movie namely Red Herring and Cliff hanger.
Figuratively, as a literary plot device, red herring allows the writer to insert an object or a person in the
story which will distract the reader or viewer from the main culprit of the story. Besides that, cliff hanger
is also used subsequently in order to keep readers interested in the melodramatic story lines.

9. Conclusion
To conclude, horror genre or horror movie for instance always aim at creating a sense of fear, panic,
alarm, and dread for the audience. Due to its mythical characters like ghost, vampires, and zombies,
horror exhibits that nature of making its viewers or readers become afraid and frustrated. Not only that,
what also account for that nature of what horror movie may seems to be is its abandoned settings, the
series of events and how it is set to lead audiences into an atmosphere of fear and panic, also the
conflicts happening in oneself and between characters in the film may also seemed. Two other literary
device which are also used such that horror genre exhibits that nature, they are red herring and cliff
hanger. All these elements successfully convey horror films into its nature of scariness.
