Chinese Program
1-4 Speaking Course

Course Description:
This course is designed for elementary-level students who have already mastered 1000-1200
commonly-used words. By taking this course, students will grasp about 500 new words,
understand the basic grammars and structures in Chinese, and be able to skillfully use
elementary-level functional items and oral expressions to communicate with native speakers. A
variety of topics will be covered in this course, like greetings, lifestyle, making friends,
transportation, illness, etc., which may help students understand more about Chinese culture and
society while learning the language. Authentic materials will be used in class from time to time.
Tasks will be given both in and out of class to create opportunities for students to use the
languages in real life situation.

Course Objectives:
Lingual Objectives:
l Grasp the initials, finals and tones of Chinese pronunciation expertly.
l Master the meaning and usage of about 500 commonly-used words on daily issues.
l Understand the basic grammars and structures in Chinese.
Functional Objectives:
l Express personal willingness, like request, proposal, assessment, hobbies, etc.
l Are able to understand speech dealing with areas of practical need such as highly
standardized messages, phrases, or instructions, if the vocabulary has been learned. .
l Complete basic tasks in daily life, such as greetings, plans, helping someone, shopping,
traveling, dining, internship, telephone reservation, etc.
Cultural Objectives:
l Briefly understand the Chinese lifestyle
l Get some general ideas of Chinese social customs and traditional culture

Materials:
Textbook: Developing Chinese, Elementary Speaking Course (II), Beijing Language and Culture
University Press, 2012.
Handouts: Handouts will be provided in class.

Forms of Assessment:
The assessment forms are listed and weighted below. The content, criteria and specific
requirements for each assessment category will be explained in greater details in class.

Attendance: *Only leave for real sickness and family emergency will be recorded as “Approved
Leave”. Leave for any other reasons, such as traveling, job affairs, accompany parents or friends,
etc., will be counted as absence. Being late for class or leave early beyond 15 minutes will also
be counted as absence.
*If you are absent for more than 40 class hours in the first half of semester, you are not allowed
to take the mid-term exam. If you are absent for more than 80 class hours by the end of this
semester, you are not allowed to take the final exam and ten points will be deducted from your
final score.
Class Performance: Students are expected to take an active role in activities such as dialogue,
group discussion, role play and presentation.
Preview & Review Work: Preview work is required to be finished before class by individual and
review work after class by individual or group. Students should hand in the work before the
deadlines. No late work accepted.
Oral Report: Students are required to give two oral reports, one before mid-term and the other in
the second half of the semester. The reporter may choose a topic about the course with the
teacher’s guidance.
Exams: The exams are of oral form. The teacher will inform the scope and form of the exams in
advance.
