 The brands
The foundation of the Rottweil powder factory on
the Neckar goes back, according to old documents,
to the 15th century. The name Rottweil became
famous thanks firstly to the red Waidmannsheil
shot cartridge and since 1921 to the current day thanks to
the legendary “black Waidmannsheil” with its cardboard case.
Rottweil shot cartridges have been made since 1971 in Fürth-
Stadeln under the control of the company RUAG Ammo-
tec GmbH. Rottweil hunting and sport shot cartridges have
always had a good reputation with regards to their quality and
RWS started development of rust-free propel-
lants back in 1901. Instead of the previously used
potassium chlorate, which often caused rust for-
mation and barrel erosion, the ammunitions spe-
cialist tested various other substances such as e.g.
barium nitrate. Increasing numbers of slow-rusting propel-
lants came into use after 1910. The main breakthrough only
came in 1918 once trizinate had been tested for use in igni-
tion caps. Trizinate is very storage stable and has excellent

performance and are appreciated equally around
the world by hunters and marksmen. Most of the
“Rottweil employees” are themselves enthusiastic
hunters and clay pigeon shooters. Their valuable
experience is constantly added to the development process
and has an influence on even the smallest details of the Rot-
tweil shotgun cartridges. This personal engagement is a part
of our company philosophy: At the moment of firing, hunters
and marksmen can concentrate on the essentials and place
their trust at all times in Rottweil shot cartridges.

in 1926, called SINOXID® and is, as a focal inven-
tion, now used around the world. The advantages
of the SINOXID® mixture are still valid today: Rust and erosion-
free action, uniform action, high storage stability and reduc-
tion of environmental pollution thanks to the mercury-free
components.
A Nobel prize for ammunition
... This doesn’t actually exist, but when
Alfred Nobel created the Alfred Nobel & Co.
in 1865 to produce the dynamite he
had developed, the pioneering spirit and
inventiveness he demonstrated were the
keys to his success. The search for new
ways, the visions of new products and
properties were part of the company phi-
losophy from the very start. The Nobel Peace Prize created
by Alfred Nobel, and awarded many times over to research-
ers, artistic and socially engaged people, proves every year
what importance aiming for improvements had, even in the

a lively history. In 1855, Heinrich Uten-
doerffer received permission to set up
a laboratory for the production of pro-
pellants. In 1889 Utendoerffer then sold his company, which
was then still located in Nuremberg, in 1889 to the “Rheinisch
Westfälische Sprengstoff-Actien-Gesellschaft” (RWS) founded
in 1886 in Troisdorf. After there were repeated problems in

of research even after Nobel’s death in
1896. In the spring of 2002, the ammu-
nitions business of Dynamit Nobel was
taken over by the Swiss technology group
RUAG. The newly created RUAG Ammo-
tec GmbH can now take advantage of the
chance to create new synergies and further develop the latest
ammunitions technology. It is no wonder that millions of hunt-
ers and marksmen around the world place their trust in the
traditional brands of RWS, Rottweil, Norma, HP and GECO.

In 1971, the shot cartridge production,
founded in Rottweil am Neckar and
located for decades in Karlsruhe-Dur-
lach, was moved to Fürth-Stadeln. Since
then, Rottweil shot cartridges for hunting and sport have been
produced here together with another wide range of products
with “explosive characters”. Production is carefully monitored
so that you can shoot successfully and safely.
 Quality decides
The case
Up until 1960, shot cartridges only came with
cardboard cases. Since the increased industrial
use of plastics in the 70’s, completely non-
swelling plastic cases have also been in use.
However, some cartridges are still produced
with cardboard in order to counter increasingly
significant environmental problems. The card-
board case tube is produced with several, glued-
together layers of a high-quality Kraft paper,
perfectly calibrated and glazed, then lacquered
as protection against moisture. The base plug
in cardboard cases consists of a special card-
board, perfectly dimensioned and produced by
strongly compressing spirally wound cardboard
strips. This stabilises the case floor, contains the propellant
and seals the case to the rear during firing. The plastic case
The ignition
The shot cartridge ignition is a centerfire igni-
tion (also called: medium ignition) and is
located in the ignition bell of the case floor.
It is an anvil ignition because the ignition
case contains the ignition cap with the very
impact sensitive propellant and the anvil. The housing, anvil
and ignition cap form a compact unit. The ignition can only

tube consists of polyethylene (PE). Polyethyl-
ene is, according to technical regulations, not
a hazardous substance and can therefore be
disposed of in domestic waste/general waste.
A thick-walled tube is produced and this tube
is continuously bi-axially stretched in a special
system. This results in five-fold strengthen-
ing of the output tube. The tube is pressed,
together with the brass head, to form the car-
tridge base by means of the base plug. The
brass head is made of sheet steel and then
brass-plated. The imprinted numbers indicate
the calibre of the cartridge. The brass head in
plastic cases replaces the card inlay thanks to
its special shape. This results in both a solid fit
of the primer and good sealing thanks to the high elasticity of
the plastic material.
work reliably when a perfect firing pin strikes
deeply enough into the centre of the ignition
cap with sufficient energy. The propellant
is pushed against the anvil by the firing pin
impact where it ignites within a thousandth
of a second. This energy is transferred in the
form of a powerful flame through the flash hole and ignites
the powder.
A balanced mixture
The intermediate material (wad)
The fibre wad, card wad, H-wad and plastic case plug all act
separately or in combination as the intermediate wad mate-
rial sealing the powder chamber away from the shot load in
the cartridge. The wad is necessary to transfer the surge of
combustion gases as force against the shot load. It also acts as
an effective sealant against the escape of hot powder gases to
the shot load. If this extreme heat acted directly
on the lead shot load, it could cause lumps to
form through the sticking together of shot grains.
This would lead to a hit pattern with poor cov-
erage and the clumped shot grains would also
have a greater range, thus putting considerable
areas around the target area in danger. The wad
material must therefore be so elastic and plas-
tic that it expands circularly when compressed
by the pressure of the combustion gases. This
ensures secure gas sealing behind the shot load
both in the case, the chamber cone of the firing
chamber and when passing through the barrel.
In addition to gas sealing, it also effects reliable
cleaning of the barrel walls, removing residues
and deposits left by the previous shot. The plas-
tic cup wad prevents the lead shot from being
abraded in the barrel. The rear section acts like a
collar seal during the shot; powder gases cannot
therefore escape in that direction.
The powder
The smokeless nitrocellulose powder is an offensive combust-
ing powder. When it is ignited, the powder charge is converted
almost without smoke and without residues into a large gas
volume which provides the shot with the necessary energy.
The type and amount of powder is decisive in determining the
gas pressure, to a large extent the speed and to some extent
the shot pattern scatter, the recoil and the function of the car-
tridge in self-loading shotguns.
The shot charge
The shot grains, made of a special lead alloy, are cast in a
shot tower 43 m high. The molten lead drips from the top of
the tower through a sieve-type container into a
water container at the foot of the tower. The fall
through the tower creates the ball shape of the
shot. A mechanical sorting device automatically
sorts out irregular and incorrectly dimensioned
grain sizes. Rottweil shot cartridges use GECO-X
hard shot which contains special alloy supple-
ments and is surface treated. This almost com-
pletely prevents deformation of the shot and
lead deposits in the barrel. Lead shot has been
increasingly criticised over the past years because
of increasing environmental awareness. Rottweil
has therefore concentrated in detail on alterna-
tives to lead shot. It was however determined
that currently there are no high-quality, techni-
cal and cost effective replacements for lead shot
apart from soft iron shot. Steel shot however
has different ballistic properties and cannot be
dealt with here in just a few sentences. We have
therefore dedicated a separate chapter to the
topic of “steel shot” (see Page 14).
The crimp
In modern shot cartridges, the case mouth is crimped closed
over the shot charge in a star crimp pattern, which reduces
the length of the cartridge (in comparison to the roll crimp
with cover wad that is only used infrequently).

Waidmannsheil pappe – Masterfully perfected for demanding hunters
The legendary Waidmannsheil Pappe has been around for
almost a century now and it can look back upon a long
tradition. Generations of hunters are familiar with this car-
tridge, which originally used to be produced with a red
and blue case. The constant optimisation process means
that the Waidmannsheil Pappe has developed into one of
the most mature shot cartridges with practically no rivals
amongst the other shot cartridges available.
M agnum – Particularly powerful for more patterning
This cartridge type is characterised by the highest possible
shot weights in calibres 12 and 20. The high shot weight
of the Rottweil Magnum guarantees sufficient killing force
even at long-range limits. This can be a factor of hunting
success in particular for small game hunting where long-
range shooting is often necessary due to unfavourable
surroundings. The Magnum cartridge may only be used in
shotguns with 76 mm (3”) firing chambers.

Jagd braun Streu – Classic excellence for short distances
Rottweil was the first shot cartridge manufacturer to have
the idea of using the spreader device originally designed
for clay pigeon shooting. This special variation of the Jagd
braun is ideal for successful shooting over short ranges,
e.g. forest hunting or crossing ducks. Greater patterning of
the shot pattern is achieved with the spreader device.

Express - Specially developed for particular hunting situations
These special cartridges are produced in various shot
diameters. Normally known as buckshot they are designed
for specific hunting applications and are used in countries
where “rough shooting” is allowed for cloven game. The
use of buckshot can be appropriate especially at short
range and under particular land conditions (e.g. thick
bush).
Brenneke – Extremely effective for shooting during driven hunts
This classic hunting cartridge contains the classic slug with
felt wad and can be used up to 50 m. The choke bore
does not influence the precision of this cartridge so that it
can be shot from all types of shotguns. This cartridge has
been available for decades in the three main calibres and
case lengths of 67.5 mm (also for shotguns with 65 mm
firing chambers) and 70 mm.

 Environmental aspects in hunting
The first discussions about lead shot,
for and against, took place in the USA.
But the question of “lead shot for
water game” has also been a hot sub-
ject for years in Europe. There is always
the danger in intensively hunted shal-
low water areas that bottom-feeding

intensively hunted or clay pigeon shooting stands located in
water protection areas or where shooting takes place near
standing or flowing water. The leaders here are the Nether-
lands and Denmark: Both countries now only permit soft iron
shot cartridges. Other European countries are also discussing
the avoidance of lead shot and are aiming in the coming years
to stop the use of lead shot almost entirely. A joint recommen-
dation by the Deutschen Jagdschutzverbandes and the Federal
Ministries for consumer protection, nutrition, agriculture and
forestry specifies complete avoidance of lead shot cartridges
for hunting ducks on water and other waterfowl. In the mean-
time, the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen, Nordr-
hein-Westfalen und Baden-Württemberg have take up this

Calibre The calibre is based on the number of uni-
formly round balls, cast from pure lead, that
weighs precisely one English pound (= 453.6
g). Calibre 12 therefore is the diameter of a
ball made of soft lead where 12 of these balls
equal one English pound in weight. The precise
diameter is specified in the dimension tables
of the firing laws.
Cardboard case Produced with several layers of glued, high-
quality Kraft paper, which is then calibrated,
glazed and painted to protected against mois-
ture.
Cardboard wad In combination with the fibre wad, this seals
off the shot cartridge from the powder cham-
ber.
Card inlay Restricts the powder chamber and provides
the case with additional strength. It consists
of several layers of Kraft paper.
Case floor Bottom of brass head, into which the calibre
and the manufacturer’s mark are imprinted.
Case length Given in mm. This is the full length of the
case – not the length of the ready-loaded,
crimped cartridge – 65, 67.5, 70 or 76 mm.
Crimped cartridges are generally approx.
6 mm shorter with roll crimps and approx.
11 mm shorter with star crimps than the
nominal measurement given for case length.
The case length 67.5 is developed for use
with 65 mm and 70 mm firing chambers.

Clump formation Produced by the escape of hot powder gases
(in lead shot) through the intermediate material into the
shot charge. The direct heat effect on the
shot charge leads to the welding together of
shot grains, increasing the danger area and
worsening patterning.
Contact energy The contact energy is the kinetic or moving
energy of the shot at the moment of contact
with the target.
Contact speed Speed at which the shot reaches the target.
Covered hit field Term for the hit area in which sufficiently effec-
tive hits are contained depending on the shot
size and type of game.
Cup wad Intermediate material. Seals the powder
chamber in plastic shot cartridges from the
shot charge and encloses the shot charge
with a plastic cup that protects the shot from
deformation and wear, and also the barrel
from lead deposits.
Density Specifies the relationship of the hit rate in the
inner circle to the outer circle of the test target
based on the surface unit. (Hit rate in inner
circle x 3, divided by the hit rate in the outer
circle). Together with coverage and speed, this
determines the individual efficiency limit of the
shotgun barrel.
Distribution See Density / Hit percentage.
Dud Cartridges that don’t ignite after firing.
Felt wad / Intermediate material, previously made with
fibre wad animal hair (felt), today made with wood fibre
(fibre). This seals the powder chamber in shot
cartridges with a cardboard wad or H-wad from
the shot charge and serves to uniformly eject
the shot weight.
Firing distance Hunting shot firing distance is at most 40 m,
depending on calibre and shot grain size.
Above this, scattering is so great that there is
not sufficient coverage. The penetration force
and therefore the effective killing effective of
the shot decreases very rapidly with increasing
shot distance. It depends greatly on the shot
grain size, the ballistic data of the cartridge,
the bore choke, etc. Soft iron shot has a lower
specific weight. A distance of max. 35 m should
not be exceeded in this case.
Firing pin This hits the ignition cap, igniting the
powder.
Folded crimp The mouth end is folded together in a star
shape over the shot (also star crimp).
Gas pressure When the powder gas ignites, the pressure
rises extremely rapidly due to the great heat
development and acts in all directions, i.e. on
the case, crimp, barrel wall and wad containing
the shot charge or ball cartridge.
High performance These are shot cartridges with soft iron shot
cartridges which can only be used in shotguns proofed
for steel shot cartridges.
Hit percentage The number of hits in a 75 cm test area at
35 m test distance in relationship to the total
number of shot in the cartridge charge as a
ratio.
H-wad Intermediate material made of plastic. Seals
the shot charge from the powder chamber in
the case.
Ignition cap See Shot cartridge ignition.
Initial speed The shot speed at the barrel mouth.

Langenhagener This states that, for huntsman-worthy hunting,

Nitrocellulose This is an offensive or progressive combusting
powder powder. When it is ignited, the extremely small
powder volume converts without much smoke
or residue into a large gas volume that provides
the cartridge with its firing energy. The type and
amount of powder is decisive in determining
the gas pressure, to a large extent the speed
and to some extent the shot pattern scatter,
the recoil and the function of the cartridge in
self-loading shotguns.
Normal cartridges Term for soft iron shot cartridges with a case
length of 70 mm and up to 3.25 mm shot
diameter which can be fired from normal firing
shotguns.
Offensive powder Extremely rapid (=offensive) combusting
powder.
Original Brenneke Ball cartridge made by the company Brenneke,
slug which can be shot as individual cartridges
fromshotguns or from shotgun barrels in
combined weapons.
Pattern Volume of shot grain that, after leaving the barrel
in the form of a cloud (=pattern), continues
to fly and whose length and width expansion
continuously increases with the increasing
distance.
Patterning Term for the uniform distribution of shot on the
test target. In addition to the choke bore, the
structure of the cartridge and the shot quality
(roundness, uniform diameter) all influence
coverage. A good coverage is therefore when
the least possible boundary shot is present.
Plastic case Prefabricated from axially stretched polyethyl-
ene (PE). Polyethylene is, according to technical
regulations, not a hazardous substance and
can therefore be disposed of in domestic
waste/general waste.
Powder gas Gas volume that provides the cartridge with
its firing energy.

Recoil Dependent on weight of weapon, shot
weight, calibre and type of powder propellant
charge.
Roll crimp A shot cartridge crimp closure with a card or
plastic wad, held by the crimped case edge
(see also Top wad).
Scatter Distance of individual shot grains to one another
at target. The greater the scatter, the lower the
patterning.
Semi-Magnum Shot cartridge with high shot weight that can
cartridges still be used in standard proofed shotguns.
Shot Term for the pellets in the shot cartridge,
usually made of a lead alloy, today there are
alternative materials, e.g. soft iron.
Shot cartridge Consists of the sheath, anvil, ignition cap
ignition and propellant. Is used to ignite the powder
propellant charge.
Shot charge See Shot weight.
Shot grain number Number system for identifying shot diameter,
e.g. no. 5 = 3 mm.
Shot grain size Usually between 2 and 4 mm, in steps of
0.25 mm.
Shot pattern See Pattern.
Shot weight Number of shot grains and total weight.
Slug See also Original Brenneke slug.
Soft iron shot (= Steel shot). Alternative to lead shot that is
being legally prescribed due to environmental
protection aspects.
Spreader device Cross-shaped plastic insert in shot charge that
ensures the shot pattern is formed rapidly
after leaving the barrel. Spreader cartridges
are used in game hunting, short-range and in
skeet shooting.
Steel shot (Also called soft iron shot). Alternative to lead
shot that is being legally prescribed due to
environmental protection aspects.
Star crimp The mouth end is folded together in a star
shape over the shot (also folded crimp).
Subsonic Special cartridges with subsonic speeds and
cartridges therefore reduced noise level. Required for
noise-sensitive shooting ranges.
Sulphur antimony (= antimony sulphide), powder component.
Tetrazes Extremely impact-sensitive compound of
yellowish, water-insoluble crystals. Is used as
initial explosive for the ignition.
Top wad Covers the shot charge in shot cartridges with
roll crimps.
Total danger Gives the total flight width of the shot, not to
zone of the shot be mistaken with long-range limit. Guidelines
in meter: Shot diameter in mm x 100.
Trizinate Lead tri-nitro-resorcinate, used as initial explo-
sive for the ignition.
