OJT NARRATIVE REPORT

INTRODUCTION:

On-the-Job training or OJT training is one important part of the civil engineering program here in
NORSU. It is where the student trainees apply the theories and learnings that they were taught from the
school to the actual field. It also helps these students to acquire essential knowledge and skills by performing
in the field.

This training is beneficial to the students and the companies that they worked on because it provides
the exchange of knowledge and skills. It also provides a powerful tool when they proceed their career in
the future.

KNOWLEDGE, LEARNINGS and OBSERVATIONS:

ALDEA Homes is where I applied for my On-the-Job training and gladfully was accepted and was
assigned in their subdivision site in National Highway, Cangmating, Sibulan, Negros Oriental. In my first
week, I was a little bit nervous but partly excited because I have no idea on what I am going to do there but
that I will have a great experience working there. On my first day, I arrived in the ALDEA main office in
Portal West, Silliman Avenue but was later transferred in ALDEA Homes Subdivision site. Me and my co-
trainees were oriented in what the works of a civil engineer are. We went to the site where the construction
of Phase 2 is located. We were told to inspect if the ground was level, if the bar spacing is approximately
30 mm apart, if there was enough oil so that the concrete won’t stick to the mold, and if the bars are not
touching the ground in preparation for the concrete mix to be poured. If the site passed the inspection, the
workers can proceed to pouring concrete to the footing and floor slab of the units. Three of these slabs and
footing are made every day so there must be a daily inspection to make sure the quality of the work being
done. Inspections are done in the morning so that the concrete mix can be poured in the afternoon. We also
inspect the quality and quantity of the cement being poured and make sure that it has the right consistency
and the right amount. Sometimes there were shortages of concrete mix especially if it rained because the
gravel will become wet hence it will become dense, but the water-cement ratio must be maintained thus
making these shortages.

Me and my co-trainees learned about the requirements of building a subdivision. It includes

building permits to fire permits and certificates of occupancy, certificate of completion and blueprints for
every unit. These paper works must be completed, filled out and sorted before constructing a unit. Since a
subdivision is like a mini-barangay, there are also these commodities and waste disposal systems that were
constructed like sewers, water tanks, and leisure like pool and basketball court.

There are also times that we have to use our learnings about CAD application to accurately compute
some areas or to place some things for the plan. Though the CAD application that we used in the subject
that we were taught is AutoCAD, DraftSite has a familiar interface but some AutoCAD commands don’t
work. We were taught with some basic commands to be used in placing streetlights and street posts and to
get the area of some units for every block. But we were also told to familiarize the interface so that it would
be easier for us to use the application.

The pictures below exhibit the placing of concrete to the mold for the construction of the reinforced
concrete walls.

The construction of their unit is not that conventional like putting some bars and setting them up
then pouring come concrete to cast it in the place of construction. Their method of constructing these walls
are not that typical because there are not made of concrete hollow blocks, concrete mix and reinforcing bars
constructed in place, but they are pre-cast made up of reinforcing bars, concrete mix and pvc tubing for the
electrical set up. The pre-cast walls are then left to dry overnight and to be erected in the morning. Just like
the inspection of the floor slabs, inspecting the quality of the pre-cast wall is no difference. we just have to
make sure that the molds are oiled up, the reinforcing bars are not touching the mold, the electrical pipes
are there and also the hooks for the crane to lift it and the dowels for it to be connected to the other walls to
form a house. After it has passed the inspection, the pouring of concrete may begin. They use this big bucket
with an opening at the bottom to manually place the concrete mix and used a vibrator to release the air
trapped in the mix.

The picture on the left shows how the individual housing unit is constructed while the picture on
the right presents the concreting of slabs and footing for each said units.

Putting the walls together is no easy task. Because these walls are pre-cast, that means that it is
very heavy and erecting them in place would be difficult using man power only. So, these walls are pulled
by a crane and transported by a trailer to the site then later lifted up by the crane to put them in place.
Because it is not cast in place, there is no strong connection in the walls to hold them up in place. These
walls have dowels that meets with the dowels of the other wall and they tack welded it. Every piece of the
unit is tack welded into place. These units are not typical because it does not have a column to support the
load of the unit, but it rather has this triangular reinforcement for every side of the wall that serves as column
for the build. I learned a lot in the construction of a unit here.

The picture on the left displays the illustration of the riprap plan to be constructed and solution of
how many materials to be used whilst the picture on the left shows the actual construction and placements
of bars for the plans.

We also get to learn how to estimate the number of bars, quantity of gravel, sand and cement to be
used in constructing a riprap and a septic tank. These quantities of materials are significant so that it can
properly support and would not topple down or damage in the later. We also get to calculate the volume of
a trapezoidal prism lagoon.

As the time went by, I learned the value of teamwork and cliquish relationship with my co-trainees
and my superiors. I learned so many principles and lessons that would be helpful when I will be on the
field. I learned how to handle things and responsibility. I will definitely will not forget this experience up
until the very last day of my training.

I would say I enjoyed my training and experience here where I developed my personality and
knowledge, expanded my capabilities and potential to become a better engineer in the future.

RECOMMENDATIONS and SUGGESTIONS:

My recommendations for the company is that there should be a proper seminar to be offered to the
incoming interns so that they will be knowledgeable about the company profile and the jobs and tasks that
they will be doing. This seminar not only enhance the interns’ learnings but also boost their performance
during their training.
