 change direct speech into indirect speech considering the rules for indirect speech; and
 reflect on the importance of following the rules in indirect speech through answering
questions.

B. Motivation

Before moving onto the rules in direct and


indirect speech, let’s have a quick question
drill.

I will ask a student a question. After they


answer, I will ask another student what was
said. For example:

T: _______, how did you get to class today?

S1: I came by a car.

T: Sorry, I didn’t get that, ______ what did


______ say?

S2: He said he came by a car.

Are we clear class? Yes ma’am.

Are you ready? Yes ma’am.

to report a speech using reporting verbs.

C. Lesson Proper

We have discussed some rules in direct and


indirect speech. Now, we will discuss three
more rules in indirect speech and I want you
to find out those rules through these
examples.

We’re done in changing the tense of the verb.

Another thing that we should remember,

If the Reported Speech expresses a universal


truth or a habitual fact, its tense remains
unchanged.

Examples:

The teacher said, “The earth revolves round


the sun”.

The teacher said that the earth revolves round


the sun.

It is a fact that the Earth revolves around the


sun, right?

Yes ma’am.
That's why the tense in this example is not
changed.

Are we clear in this rule, changing in tense?

Now, let’s move to the next rule. Yes ma’am.

Take a look at this example,

Our adviser told us, “Take short-term


computer courses in college for six months.”

Observe the type of sentence used, and the
highlighted word in the indirect speech.

From this example, what do you think is the

Rules for conversion of Indirect Speech to
Direct Speech

To change from Indirect to Direct Speech,


keep the rules of the Direct Speech are
applied in the reverse order.

 Use the reporting verb, "say" or "said


to" in its correct tense.
 Remove the conjunctions "that, to, if
or whether etc.” wherever necessary.
 Insert quotation marks, question mark,
exclamation and full stop, wherever
necessary.
 Put a comma before the statement.
 Write the first word of the statement
with capital letter.
 Change the past tense into present
tense wherever the reporting verb is in
the past tense.
 Convert the past perfect either into
past tense or present perfect as found
necessary.
 Be careful about the order of words in
the question.

We will not be discussing each one, since you


already know the rules for indirect speech.

D. Generalization

Are we now clear with the all the rules in


indirect speech?

Again, can anyone tell the rules for changing
pronouns?
The first person of the reported speech

E. Application

First, I will group you into four and each


group should form their chairs into circle. We
will be having a quiz bee, but in this quiz bee
we have only two levels. In the first level, I
will show you direct speeches with a rewritten
form in indirect speech and you will just wrte
correct/wrong on your paper. For the next
level, I will show only direct speeches and
you have to rewrite it into the correct indirect
speech.

Each level has 5 items, for level 1, every


correct answer will be given 2 points, and for
level 2, every correct answers will be given 5
points.

Also, for every item, the writer in your group


will change but you can help your groupmates
in answering. Are we clear?

Rewrite the following direct speech into indirect speech.

1. He says, “Switzerland is the heaven on earth.”

2. The Shopkeeper says, “Prices are shooting up alarmingly.”

3. She said, “Nobody can solve the problem.”

4. Antony said, “Martin has gone home.”

5. She said, “I shall be taking a test.”

6. She said “I´ve found my keys!”

7. “Her parents are getting married next Friday” she assured us.
8. The news said “There has been a big earthquake in Japan”.

9. “Stop making so much noise!” the mother said to the children.

10. “Pam visited us yesterday” Pete said.

V. Assignment

Convert the following short conversations into reported speeches.

One time, my elder brother and I had aa chance to watch a late-night movie about the
possibility of the computer taking over man’s tasks.

“I’m afraid that these computers will really take over all our tasks,” I said.

“Computers cannot replace us, even though they are taking over some of the tasks that were
once accomplished by our brain,” my brother replied.

“Yes, I learned that our brain has more than 10billion cells while the computer has only a
few hundred parts,” I agreed.

“Therefore, our brain is far more complex than a computer,” my brother explained. “How we
use it is for us, not the computer, to decide.”
