1 State D’Alembert’s principle. R CO1 2
(Nov/Dec 2014, 2017)
2 During a trial on steam engine, it is found that the acceleration of the piston is R CO2 2
36 m/s2 when the crank has moved 30° from the inner dead centre position, the net
effective steam pressure on the piston is 0.5 N/mm2 and the frictional resistance is
equivalent to a force of 600 N. The diameter of the piston is 300 mm and the mass
of the reciprocating parts is 180 kg. If the length of the crank is 300 mm and the
ratio of the connecting rod length to the crank length is 4.5, find the piston force.

4 Distinguish the function of Flywheel from Governor. U CO1 2
5 A flywheel fitted to a steam engine has a mass of 800 kg and its radius of gyration Ap CO1 2
is 360 mm. The starting torque of the engine is 580 Nm. Find the angular
acceleration of the flywheel.
6 Write the expression for the coefficient of fluctuation of speed in terms of Ap CO1 2
maximum fluctuation of energy and the kinetic energy of a flywheel at mean speed.
(Nov/Dec 2017)
7 A flywheel connected to a punching machine has to supply energy of 400 Nm while U CO1 2
running at a mean angular speed of 20 rad/s. If the total fluctuation of speed is not
to exceed ±2%, find the mass moment of inertia of the flywheel in kgm2.

10 The crank and connecting rod of a vertical petrol engine, running at 1800 rpm Ap CO1 16
are 60 mm and 270 mm respectively. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm
and the mass of the reciprocating parts is 1.2 kg. During the expansion stroke
when the crank has turned 20o from the top dead centre, the gas pressure is
650 kN/m2. Determine the net force on the piston, net load on the gudgeon
pin, thrust on the cylinder walls and speed at which the gudgeon pin load is
reversed in direction.
(Nov/Dec 2017)

-25, +200, -100, +150, -300, +150 and -75 mm2 taken in order. The scale for
the turning moment diagram is 1 mm vertical scale = 10 Nm and 1 mm
horizontal scale = 1.5o. The masses of the rotating parts are 45 kg with a
radius of gyration of 150 mm. If the engine speed is 1500 rpm, find the co-
