Course Outcomes:
CO 1: Determine the forces acting on machines and mechanisms such as cams, flywheels, and engines.
CO 2: Perform static and dynamic balancing calculations for rotating and reciprocating machinery.
CO 3: To evaluate the various types of vibrations and to impart knowledge in calculating natural
frequency and forces caused by unbalance.
CO 4: Understand the various types of governor’s principle and their efficiency and determine
gyroscopic couple on Motorized Gyroscope both experimentally and analytically.

10 The crank and connecting rod of a vertical petrol engine, running at 1800 rpm Ap CO1 16
are 60 mm and 270 mm respectively. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm
and the mass of the reciprocating parts is 1.2 kg. During the expansion stroke
when the crank has turned 20o from the top dead centre, the gas pressure is
650 kN/m2. Determine the net force on the piston, net load on the gudgeon
pin, thrust on the cylinder walls and speed at which the gudgeon pin load is
reversed in direction.

11 The areas above and below the mean torque line for an I.C. engine are Ap CO1 16
-25, +200, -100, +150, -300, +150 and -75 mm2 taken in order. The scale for
the turning moment diagram is 1 mm vertical scale = 10 Nm and 1 mm
horizontal scale = 1.5o. The masses of the rotating parts are 45 kg with a
radius of gyration of 150 mm. If the engine speed is 1500 rpm, find the co-
efficient of fluctuation of speed.
